Daisy chaining G-RAID2 and G-Drive mini

Hi all,
Just got myself a little G-Drive mini 160GB which I intend to use for Time Machine. Having a G-Raid2 connected via FW800 to my PowerMac G5, can I connect the Mini to the G-Raid's FW 400 port? Will it provide enough power for the mini to run properly?
Thanks in advance
Frank

Hi Frank,
Yes it will provide enough power as long as it the last in the chain and not first. For example.
G-Raid 2 is connected to the computer and the G-Drive mini is connected to the G-Raid2. It will work.
G-Drive mini is connected to the computer and the G-Raid 2 is connected to the mini will not work.
That being said, there is a few things that you need to know..
We recommend that no more then three Firewire devices be connected to a computer at any one time. Sometimes depending on the computer model, operating system, and chipset used in the devices three units will slow the performance of the bandwidth on the Firewire bus.
For example, lets say that you wanted to capture video from a DV deck, and output the data directly to an external drive such as a G-Raid 2 or any firewire drive for that matter using a MacPro or a MacBookPro.
Most likely you will come across dropped frames or data corruption because of the fact that on all Apple products there is only one chipset that regulates the input and output of all the data that is running through all the Firewire ports.
That chipset more often then not will receive the data from the deck and output it to another Firewire source at the same time.
The only suggestion that we have for that kind of a situation is to purchase a express 34 Firewire card for a MacBookPro or a PCIe Firewire card for a MacPro.
Please keep in mind that if you use a bus powered product such as our G-Raid Mini with a Firewire express card 34 that it can not send power to the external drive. However, most PCIe cards can send power to a bus powered drive.

Eduard,
Many thanks for your detailed response.
Here is the setup I have:
I have a Powermac G5 DP 2.0 (June 2004). To the G5 are connected: G-Raid2 via FW800 and Apple's 20-in Cinema Display via FW400. The Cinema Display has 2 FW400 ports and 2 USB2.0 ports available. I have an external iSight and the G-Drive Mini connected to both FW400 ports.
If I move the Mini to the G-Raid2 FW port, do you see any problems with this? Would the iSight count as a 3rd peripheral in the equation you indicated?

Ok,
I connected the Mini to the Raid2's FW port but to my dismay, the Raid2 has to be switched on for the Mini to get power. I was under the impression the Raid2 could act as a passthrough much like the old SCSI days :) Oh well, back the Mini goes to the Cinema Display port.

Hi Frank, yes the G-RAID 2 does need to be on so that it can provide power to the G-Drive Mini. Also, please note that the isight can cause a lot of problems with other devices connected via Firewire 400 and 800. My suggestion to you, only plug it in when you need to the rest of the time don't even have it connected. This is the way I run mine at home.
One other note to consider, any and all of the Firewire devices that you connect to your computer or through your Apple display are connected to only one Firewire bus. You may want to considering getting a Firewire card inside your computer so that you can device the load on the Firewire bus.

Eduard,
I appreciate the tips. Indeed I do not use the iSight daily yet it remains connected so disconnect i will.
I'll look into purchasing a FW card. May as well make use of them PCI-X slots :) Any brand you guys at G-Tech favour?
Thanks again for the tips Eduard.
