Advice for a good (beginners) motion graphics Showreel?

I hope this is the right place to ask this question.. and I hope the question is well defined!!
As a beginner trying to get together a good showreel for job hunting, I wonder if there are certain things that a motion graphics reel should show: That you can use 3d layers, track masks or whatever..
..or maybe that you, as an employer have seen tons of reels and often are left thinking "..but could he make a background for a news program..?"
