I am trying to make a DVD of 89 minutes of material. In order to do so i have to lower the transcode bitrate. How low can i go without a noticeable hit in quality. I seem to have to be around 6000kbs to fit it. Does this sound right?

Here's a bitrate calculator to help determine max rate. I usually encode in either Encore or Sorenson using 2-Pass VBR with 6500 Kbps average. How low you can go is pretty subjective and really depends on many factors: input quality, encoder used, etc.

I am trying to encode in enocre but it is giving my problems. The shorter clips import fine, the longer ones get through the 2 passes of video fine and conk out halfway through the audio. I have searched the cow but none of their suggestions have worked, so i wanted to try doing it in sonic also.

Make sure you are exporting and encoding the audio and video streams separately. That is, export and AIFF or WAV, encode, then export ONLY the video layer as a ref file.
