compatibility problem from DVDit 6.x burned DVD-R
by Klaus-Peter Prieur on Jul 13, 2006 at 1:22:34 pm

I have a compatibility problem from DVDit 6.x burned DVD-R. They cannot be played on Panasonic DVD recorders.
Nero DVD/CD speed says the DVD is still open!!!!
All DVD burned with DVDit is still open after my test!!!!
Burner: NEC ND-3520AW
With RecordNow of a DVDit 6 image burned a DVD-R, with the same burner is OK ONE.
Nero DVD/CD speed says this DVD is closed!!!!!

Someone has experience thereby.

K.P. - I posted earlier on this forum about compatibility and got no replies. (see "Better Playback Compatibility with ImgBurn")

I, too, cannot playback DVDit 6 burned discs in Panasonic recorders unless I create a Disc Image and use another program to burn the disc.

This has now become my workflow - author in DVDit Pro 6, create Disc Image, and burn DVD using ImgBurn (freeware). I have not had ANY compatibility issues using ImgBurn.

I had a very lengthy back-and-forth with Sonic Support about this issue (I should NOT have to go to another program to burn my discs) but they could not resolve it. They suggested that it could be an issue between the DVDit burn engine and the DVD burner on my computer (I have a NEC DVD-RW ND-1300A), and that installing a new DVD burner might resolve the problem. At this point, however, I do not trust the DVDit burn engine, and I will continue to burn my discs using ImgBurn, even after I upgrade to a new DVD burner.

Here is the final post I received from Sonic Support on this issue:

>>>Playback compatiblity is impossible to predict because of the factors involved. How compatible is the program with the drive, that is, how well does the program communicate with the drive? What quality is the drive, does it create more errors than your standard burner? Every disc burned from a consumer burner will have errors, they're just so insignificant that you never notice them. And lastly, how compatible is the media with the drive? And in some very odd cases, how compatible the media is with the program. But there are steps you can take to help your chances like having a good burner and high quality media.

You're using good media. Verbatim, Imation, Sony, TDK, and Fuji are great DVD manufacturers. In the position I'm in I can't recommend a product over another, but I can tell you that many educated users and computer hardware sites agree, the BenQ DW1640, Sony DRU-810A, and the Pioneer DVR-109 are all some of the best drives on the market, not to mention they all support Dual layer media which may interest you. Here's a review of the Sony which is very similar to the Benq drive (http://www.cdrlabs.com/reviews/index.php?reviewid=273&page=Intro). For more info on drives you can find user reviews and media reviews at videohelp.com (http://www.videohelp.com/dvdwriters).

There really isn't anything else we can do on the computer to get this process any more compatible.
Before sending you off to buy a new burner I consulted with another long time tech and he agrees, the NEC will cause trouble whether it be the issue now, which we both consider likely, or will cause one in the future.<<<

I think this is a cop-out. I have NO trouble or compatibilty issues with my NEC drive when I am using ImgBurn - I only have problems when I am using DVDit Pro 6.

DVDit is definitely creating closed DVDs on my HL DT ST DVD+RW GCA 4040N. Curious that you both have NEC burners. We will look into it.

For what it is worth, a quick search shows the following extensive test info for the 1300A (sorry, haven't found similar for the 3250):
