lower volume level of input source

I have a tape recorder (jvc td-v621) hooked up to my computer (windows xp) and I am transferring rock music from a cassette onto the computer for editing on Adobe Audition
(version 1.5).
Here is the problem: the audio signal from the tape recorder to the computer is coming through at a maximum volume, and as a result, the recorded music, when played back on AA, sounds somewhat distorted (even when I lower the dB levels after the dubbing). The volume on the cassette and cassette player is optimal when played independently. There is no distortion from the original cassette source.
In terms of cable connections, two rca jacks are connected to line-out in the back of the cassette tape, and the other end is connected to the motherboard on the computer (using a 2 to 1 cable).
Is there a way on AA software itself to lower the volume level of an incoming audio source (in this case music from a cassette tape) while dubbing or re-recording it live?
