Edit 2 HDV formats on a G5? HELP PLEASE

I have an upcoming 2 camera shoot. One camera is a Panasonic HVX200, the other has not been purchased yet but my client is thinking of buying a low-end HDV cam like the Canon Vixia HF200 (he wants to spend under $500 if possible). The client is determined to eliminate tape from the workflow/budget. That's fine but it raises issues for me.
I have a G5, dual 2 gig, Power PC with 3 gigs of RAM, runnning FCP 6.0.5. I understand I can't edit AVCHD on a non-Intel Mac, so should I shoot in SD? And if I shoot in SD will it still be tapeless?
Is there another camera that records to cards or a hard drive, and I can convert to a compatible format?
What about workflow with 2 different codecs? Can Voltaic HD help out with converting for my G5?
I feel like I'm stuck between the old world and the new, without a proper map. I need camera and workflow recommendations. Any help or guidance on this would be greatly appreciated.

If the client wants to spend under $500, rent another HVX and avoid the headaches of mixed formats.
If you do end up with different cameras, I would shoot everything HD and try to match the resolution and frame rate. Use Compressor to convert your B camera footage to DVCProHD.
