HD 1080 or 720 for internet video?
by Santana Issar on Oct 23, 2009 at 7:57:25 pm

Hi,

I'm making a short internet video using stock footage that I plan to buy off the net.

I have the option to buy the same clip in HD 720 (cheaper) or HD 1080 (expensive).

I want to know if there'll be a big drop in quality if I use HD 720 instead of 1080? For a video that'll only be viewed on computer screens? (Or does this not matter?)

Thanks.

Are you going to keep the native resolution? Is the 1080 going to be full resolution and progressive or interlaced?, computer monitors are progressive, if you want to save on bandwidth 720p would be better

Hi Brian.

The 1080 is progressive. I'm not going to keep the native resolution, will have to scale it down.

Santana,

What dimensions will the clip be resized to when uploaded to the internet?

If your clip is just going to be compressed to go online I would definitely suggest you go for the HD720p version. This will also give you a great image if you decide to burn your clip onto SD DVD at a later date. If you get spend more on the 1080p version you'll be wasting your money since you won't see the benefits of higher resolution on a highly compressed web video.

HD720p will work great for you.

Hope that helps,
Adam

If, however, you plan to output to HD 1080 in the future, go for 1080 stock clip if you can afford it. You will be building toward a full 1080 library for the future.
