Sony HD1000 vs Canon XL1
by Joel Witwer on Jul 14, 2009 at 9:31:39 am

I recently had to face the fact that I need to purchase my own Bcam as opposed to renting or borrowing one all the time. My current cam is a canon GL2 and I have loved the thing so I was naturally looking towards the canon XL series for my next one. Since I am a college student with limited funds (<$2000) I was going to settle for a canon XL1. I had dreamed of moving up to the HD XLs, but not near enough money.

Then I came across the sony HD1000, which caught my eye due to it's ability to shoot HD as well as being relatively cheap. I have not been able to find a satisfactory review of the camera and am slightly scared by the fact that it only has a single CMOS detector as opposed to the three CCDs present in XLs.

Any advice anyone could give me on this would be greatly appreciated.

The HD1000 is basically a repackaged Sony HC-7, which is comparable to a Canon HV20, if you don't need the look of a shoulder-mount camcorder, something like a HC-9 or HV30/40 would do the same
