HDV to MP4
by don jangeman on Jul 3, 2009 at 4:14:51 pm

Hi all,

here's a friday afternoon dilemma on which I'd like some thoughts.

We need to convert HDV (1080i) to MP4 and it's suggested that it's best to

1) capture to Apple Intermediate Codec
2) play onscreen and grab the window in iShowU
3) 'cause it converts to MP4 on the fly...

Mmm. My mind screams No Way! How 'bout timecode? Non-square pixels? Interlacing? Realtime compression?

Quicktime Pro conversion takes some time, but I consider it much better quality.

Please can anyone help me on this one? thanks a lot already, and for now... Happy Weekend!

Don

Ok, I know everyone's busy or on a holiday :) but I'm sweating here and I'm still puzzled about my 'assignment'. I don't want to invest in software like iShowU, not knowing whether it works for me. Please, please, please, can anyone confirm or deny the logic in the above stated workflow? thanks so much already, - Don

Don,
You don't say in your post what NLE you are using, but I am assuming it is FCP.

Can't comment on FCP as I am Vegas Pro user, but in my workflow, I capture/copy the HDV files and then render out the video using either the MainConcept or the SONY AVC/AAC codec.

With either one, I end up with an MP4 file h.264 encode.

I am assuming that you can do something similar in FCP.

HTH,

Cheers for now,

@ Tom : thanks for you reply.

The (imposed) idea is to capture with FCE, so it will be stored on disk in Apples Intermediate Codec. But there's no editing involved. It's intended for archiving the (rush)material and make ik available for viewing on all platforms (hence mp4). I think the iShowU-trick isn't sufficient.

In my opinion capturing in FCP allows for a HDV-file, that in turn can be (batch) encoded with QTpro (or even in FCP for that matter).

greets Don
