Casio EX F1 HD footage problem (Viewing/NLE's)
by Norman Greenwood on May 5, 2009 at 7:09:28 pm

I have the Casio EX F1 and decided to shoot a small short with it to test it out.

I am shooting in 16:9, 60i, 1920 x 1080 with BS-Night Scene. I have some adjustments on the saturation, contrast, and dynamic range as well.

My problem is that when I tried to view the QT files I recorded they would play, but every other second frame-skip would occur, making me miss a small part of what I recorded.

I threw it into After Effects to remove some grain and see if it would render properly. Instead of getting frame-skipping, the movie I rendered would play out (slowly) way past the 5 seconds I decided to render, and would have some jagged frames. I even changed the settings to 30fps, but it only made it run a bit faster with the same problem.

The best luck I had was with Vegas 8.0. I put the QT file in and rendered it as an uncompressed AVI file (Vegas had a helluva time trying to play the QT file). I put the AVI file back into Vegas and it played back pretty well. The only thing I noticed in the playback was strobing from the subject and some when moving the camera (this may be the camera itself and the fact it uses CMOS instead of CCD). But when I played the AVI on Window's Media Player, there was really bad lag and much more strobing happening than in the Vegas playback.

Does anyone know why this is occurring and how to fix it?

I am using a PC with 2GB of RAM and a 2.4GHz core duo. Would I have better luck on a Mac?

Thanks for the help.

A-what is the bitrate the Casio is encoding to?
B-Is it correct to assume this is MPEG 4, not AVCHD?
C-Rendering to an intermediate like .mxf will likely give you better options regardless of the NLE/compositor used.

Cineform Neo is another terrific solution for mpeg 4 files, if you don't mind spending 100.00 to support a low-end camera.

A-The bitrate for 1080i footage is 13.6Mbps
B-This is a MP4 file and uses the H.264 codec
C-So should I drop the file in Vegas and render to a .mxf and see how it works from there?

Thanks.

I have been shooting with the Casio EX F1 for about a year, now. It is a remarkable camera. Vegas 8.0b could not handle the 1920 x 1080 files, but 8.0c can. Vision, the very rudimentary NLE packaged with Nero, plays these files very well and can output them to a variety of streams. It renders quickly as well. Have you tried the Casio's 1280 x 720p recording setting yet? Very smooth in Vegas. There is a firmware update on the Casio site as well. Good luck!
