Editing 1080i & 720p together
by Chet Wesley on Feb 14, 2009 at 12:45:34 am

Hello,
I have to find a camera that can mix well with a JVC GY-HD110, but which is less expensive. I am looking at some of the less expensive JVC 3CCD HD cameras, such as GZHD3 and GZHD7 but notice the lack of a progressive mode. They are both 1080i. The HD110 is 720P

What we mostly shoot is talks & lectures, so there is obviously not a lot of motion other than hand gestures, some slow panning across an audience, etc. Also, I don't think the downscaling would be any problem (ie: bringing the 1080 down to 720).

What I am wondering is if there would be a noticeable difference in motion when cutting from one camera to another in an edit if one camera is interlaced and one is progressive.

Thanks for any input from anyone with experience with this.

If something moves fast like a hand, you may see visable interlacing on the 1080i clips. Sony Vegas has the option to set the project properties to progressive to avoid this problem. If your NLE doesn't do this you can render the interlaced clips to 720P.
Hope this helps, Danny Hays
