Sony HVR-M15U and Canon HV30 Question
by Cory McKechnie on Feb 11, 2009 at 10:10:27 pm

Hello all, just a quick question about digitizing footage into FCP.

I am getting a new ongoing freelance gig that will be shooting on a Canon HV30. I currently am not set up to get the HDV footage into my system and have been using the camera while the shooter is here to encode. However, that's not a feasible option all the time so I am looking at options to be able to do this without her camera.

My first thought was to simply get the Canon HV30 myself, but I'm not really looking for a camera and would simply use it as a deck. Then I came across the Sony HVR-M15U and wondered if this would satisfy my needs for the Canon HV30 footage (in any mode that the footage is shot in) as well as for other MiniDV footage.

Any thoughts on the compatibility of these two products? Any real life experiences anyone can share?

Many thanks,
Cory

The M15U works great for capturing footage from the HV30 as long as its shot in 1080i60. However, the M15U won't read Canon's 24F and 30F formats. Have to stick with Canon cameras for that. Or make sure nothing is shot in 24F or 30F.

Hmm, that's what I was worried about. OK, looks like i'll just have to get the camera itself then.
Thanks Mike,
