simplest V1U 24p workflow - any OS/editor

Hello,
So i have a projct that was shot on Sony V1U at 1080i 24p (not 24pA). I have spent weeks scouring the web, including this forum, and i have yet to gain any clarity about a FCP workflow - sounds like if it's not 24pA then i'm out of luck, even with the 6.02 update to FCS2.
Should i just forget about FCP and run Vegas Pro 8 on bootcamp? I am assuming Sony software can handle any format from a Sony camera. Bootcamp is sub optimal on Mac Pro because of the 2GB RAM limit on 32bit windows and lack of support for RAID on the motherboard, but if it's my only good option i will live with it.
At this point I just need to decide whether to buy FCS2 or Vegas Pro 8. Thanks in advance for any advice.

You have the 24p look on the HDV tape from the V1U, just use the easy setup HDV 60i or if you must remove the pulldown edit with Vegas. No one including you will ever know you used a 60i sequence when you are finished should you go that route. If it is going to DVD or to broadcast the pulldown will be added back somehow before it gets to the monitor. IMO Forget about a true 24p timeline.

thanks so much for the reply, Michael.
so you mean i can use easy setup HDV 60i to capture in FCP? If i am going to DVD/Blueray and only care about the look, not actual 24p, does that mean the pulldown is a non-issue in a 29.9 FCP timeline?
Last time i tried to capture it using FCP 6 (without the .2 update) it looked horribly interlaced/jagged. it also dropped frames like crazy - don't know if that was a pulldown thing or the MBP was not up to it. I now have a shiny new Mac Pro but have not purchased FCS2 yet...

Yes and Yes.
I'm not going to suggest either NLE as you must decide on what works best for you, however if you have FCP 5.04 it will edit HDV 60i, I'm sure you could find what you need in older version of Vegas too. The bottom line is that Sony added pulldown to conform to NTSC monitors. What do you think happens when a feature film is broadcast for TV. The sensors on the V1U (in 24p record mode) only made 24 progressive images and then a processor added the pulldown and then it was compressed/encoded (as 60 fields or 30 frames) as HDV onto a mini DV tape.

wow - well that's great news! i don't know what i was doing wrong when i tested capturing into FCP6 and it looked horrible (interlaced, jagged/jumpy motion), but i think i will take the cam over to the Apple store and test capturing on one of their machines.
i would prefer to use FCP/OS X as long as it works...

When capturing you may not be seeing all the frames in the capture window, don't judge anything from that window. Play the captured clips in whatever NLE you captured them with. You really need to have the media on a separate drive and not on the system drive.
