HDV capture problem HVR-270
by Larry Brewer on Aug 31, 2008 at 6:47:01 am

I have searched the archives and found no reference to my particular problem, but sorry if this has already been discussed.

I am shooting on a HVR-270 Sony camcorder in the HDV mode. On a recent shoot, the first 9 mins of recording consisted of 8 camera stop/starts and the time code rec mode was set to rec run. The captured timecode worked as it would have been expected. Each clip's timecode picked up where the previous left off. So far so good.

Then... apparently the client had asked for a playback in the field, the tape was cued past the last recorded frame... the next scene's timecode started at zero. This is not unexpected, the TC gen had nothing to regenerate... But, after capture, all the following scenes also start at Timecode zero. This was unexpected. Stranger still is the fact that the timecode readout in the viewfinder and the LCD timecode display did not indicate a problem during taping in the field.

Further still, during capture the timecode display on the Vegas capture window does not show zero timecode at the beginning of each cut, but appears to display a normal rec run time code. The LCD display on the camcorder also shows continuous timecode during capture not indicating a zero timecode at the beginning of each clip. The captured clips do not reflect the timecode displayed during capture with the exception of the first 9 mins before the recording gap.

So to condense and restate the problem I have a tape with 3 hrs of recorded material in HDV mode. the first 9 mins have rec run timecode with each clip's timecode starting where the previous clip ends. then a 2 sec. gap in the recording. all clips after that re-start with zero timecode even though no changes were made to the camcorder setting during the taping. All the while the viewfinder and LCD timecode readout indicates normal rec run timecode playback.

I hope I described this situation clearly and would appreciate any help explaining this issue so I can avoid it in the future.

Jayanta,
Is the problem common to HDV footage or DVCam footage or both?

Not familiar with your NLEs. Need more detail about the problem in general. Does your PC even "see" the firewire connection and the HVR-s270 attached? The problem may just be an improperly installed firewire card or a card not properly configured to your NLE.

My Vista OS on my PC provides a "Import Video" application that launches automatically when I plug in an active firewire device such as the HVR-s270. I have captured DVCam video using this application and later imported it into my NLE as AVI files.

There are other 3rd party, stand alone, capture applications that you can use just to test the hardware configuration of your PC.

If you can capture using any of these, then your problem is likely your NLE / capture card configuration.

good luck!
