Could anyone recommend a good resource to learn more about the usage of the different HDV video formats, i.e. 1920x1080 60i, 1440x1080 60i, 1280 x 720 24p.
I shoot with a Sony XDCam ex-1 and basically stick to two formats because of my lack of understanding about the others, and the literature that comes with the camera is very vague.

Wade, you really should have already viewed the wonderful double DVD workshop "Mastering the Sony PMW-EX1" made by Vortex Media and presented by Doug Jensen. It is a must for anyone new to this camera and the ground breaking tapeless recording. This was my 'bible' for weeks when the camera was new to me and I'm surprised that the people from whom you got the camera did not either give you one or at least bring it to your notice. It is so much better than trying to make sense of a typical Sony instruction manual.

Wade, if you can, take the camera during down time (possibly a nice weekend) take someone with you to a nice park on the outskirts of the CBD (if you live in a big city) and record in the various formats the EX1 offers. Label each recording prior to recording so you know what you are watching back. Have your friend, wife walk around, run, sit & interview, learn about depth of field from the lens, pan & tilt across buildings, record the rowers on the river, record in slow mo & fast motion to see the results.
That is exactly what I am going to do with my EX3. You have a fantastic camera with many features and the only way to know what each does, is to try them. You can then utilise one or more features in your next project.
I am looking forward to the next couple of weekends with my camera and my wife - or should it be my wife and my camera!
