monitor suggestions?
by Russ Spencer on Jul 16, 2008 at 12:18:07 am

I have begun using HDV footage through my Sony Z1U. Would like to get a Kona card and a monitor to watch this footage as my SD monitor doesn't work. Any suggestions on a good monitor? I edit on two 23" apple displays.

If you have the budget, I'd go for one of the JVC HD b'cast LCD monitors. Some people like the Panasonics as well. Avoid Sony LCDs of any kind. The JVC and Pannys are both fairly accurate, and much less cash than the very accurate ($20K) monitors out there. If you're on a tight budget, I'd look for a good consumer display at one of the big box stores, and calibrate it as best you can.

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for your input. I am on a budget so will probably go the consumer level display route. Can you give me tips on where I could find information about calibrating such a display? Many thanks.

Have you looked at the Matrox MXO? $999 plus a 23" ACD will probably get you the best budget monitoring out there.

I have been VERY happy with my JVC DTV-20L1U. It can be bought for less than 900 dollars. The native res is 1680x1050. If you want pixel for pixel representation check out the 24 inch model (although it is nearly 2 times as expensive). I have been thrilled with the 20 inch model.

I wish I was good at one thing rather than average at many, but oh well.
