Sony HDV and cannon HDV compatibility
by Pablo Hill on Jul 11, 2008 at 3:56:33 am

I've been using a sony camera and player for quite some time and have been getting good results with my fcp station, but been tempted into changing my FX1 for a cannon A1. I have heard some issues about hdv compatibility between brands. My question is, will my sony hdv player work with the hdv's taped in the cannon camera?

Unless you know that the Canon can do something the Sony can't it wouldn't be worth the transition. Sony HDV is simple, it is 60i for the most part. Canon doesn't make a deck, Canon has an HDV flavor of its own and unless the new Sony M15A/M25A or M35 decks are capable of the Canon F HDV flavor you should stick with what you know. If you want 24p then I would look into the Sony V1U.

Good Luck

Pablo,
What Michael said is completely correct. Specifically, if you shoot progressive on the Canon, your Sony deck will NOT be able to read the footage. Canon has their own style of progressive shooting (24f and 30f) which can only be played back through a Canon camera which adds unecessary wear on the heads. If you can provide more info on what type of shooting you will be doing, I can recommend an appropriate camera for you.

[Scot Lenter] "Canon has their own style of progressive shooting (24f and 30f) which can only be played back through a Canon"

...or, as Michael said, a Sony M35 deck, which will play Canon's 24f footage (and most anything else) fine.
