Sony HVR V1E vs Canon XL1

I was going to hire a Canon XL1 for shooting a music promo, mainly because it's what I have experience in using. However, the place I am hiring equipment from is now saying I won't be able to have the Canon, so they will give me the next camera up on their rate card for the same price. The camera I believe I will get is the Sony HVR V1E. I wasn't planing to shoot in HD (obviously, as I was wanting the Canon XL1) and I have never used a camera with HD facility before. I'm assuming that the Sony will record in SD as well as HD. Is this the case? Also, will the Sony be fairly easy for me to use compared to the Canon? I've got the Sony this weekend to practice some shots before the actual shoot - any thing I need to know?
Please note before posting a reply: I have already posted this question in the Sony DV and Canon camera forums but somone suggested posting it here. No need to answer me here, if you have done so in either of the other forums.
Thanks.

I believe you will do well with the V1, it shoots 24p in both HDV and DV. The one thing you need to do is keep the settings display on at all times to ensure you have manually set the gain , white balance, iris and shutter to what you want it set at. I would also use the lock switch once you setup for each shot. It may need a little more light than the Canon but it will deliver really nice images. If you set the white balance to daylight and you push the scroll wheel in you will activate the manual adjustment that should help you find a color balance you like.

The Z1 doesn't shoot progressive and the CineFrame mode isn't really a progressive. Great interlace camera but if you want progressive images get the V1 or Panasonic HVX-100 if DV is what you want to shoot.
