HDV Exporting

I have a Sony V1U HDV camcorder - I plan to edit my videos
in Final Cut Pro V5.1.4 Using a Mac G5 OSX 4.11 with a G-Raid 1.5 TB
Disk array using firewire 800 port. I want to capture in HDV Format then go back to tape for archive as well as store the HDV Tape Masters and timeline in case I have to re-edit sequences later. I created
a Sequence template using Apple Intermediate codec at 1440 x 1080
resolution / Lower Field Dominant at 29.97 fps - This allows me
to export the final edited video back to tape using the Sony V1U -
Will there be any quality drop in this approach from the camera
captures verses the edited timeline? I'd like the tape archive to be
as first generation quality as possible.

You can edit with 5.1.4 but the newer 6.0.2 would allow you to remove the pulldown and work with 24p on the timeline and capture to Pro Rez . I couldn't imagine going back to tape when you could just export as Pro Rez .mov to a backup external drive. This IMO would be a better solution. HDV is really just an acquisition codec for low cost HD recording and not something you will want to output back to tape.
The Sony-V1U has HDMI outputs from the camera and the blackmagic board would capture full HD from the HDMI signal - Any advantage to this
workflow over capturing to the Pro Rez card?

Yes
I have worked with the HDMI on the V1U and found it is the best possible way to stay completely digital allowing the on board processor in the camera to decompress the HDV 1440x1080i signal to an uncompressed 1920x1080 full HD raster signal you can transcode to your favorite codec for easier post workflow. I use the Convergent Design HD-Connect MI converter box (HDMI to HD-SDI) into my Kona LHe card. If you plan on capturing to Pro Rez you may need an Intel unit. I think the only PPC was the Last Quad unit that has enough poop to transcode to PR. This is a real time uncompressed capturing solution that makes the most of HDV. One other benefit is there is also an error control that helps for any tape drop outs that HDV capturing via firewire won't have. Magic can be made from the Long GOP compression and there processors. Another note to the V1U HDMI is that you can send a 720p signal from it if you need to cross convert or you can set the MI to do it too.

Hi Jeff,
Checkout this thread on capturing straight from the chip, no tape to true uncompressed from a HDV camera. I believe it'lll only work direct to disk and not from tape as it wil allready be the HDV M2T format when recording to tape. My camera doesn't have an HDMI out and I was looking into component from the chip to the black magic extreme. If you have a black magic with analog in, can you try component from your cam direct without tape and see what quality difference it is from firewire to M2T? I would greatly appreciate it. Danny Hays

Yes HDMI Output is an option for me with the V1U -
I am looking into the Black Magic Intensity Board to see if that
will work for me - As I understand it - capturing native HD with
the HDMI output will get me better source files than HDV out
using firewire - That will be a huge benefit to creating
better quality masters.
