Sony Z7 and weddings
by Robert Bec on Jun 9, 2008 at 11:10:39 pm

Hi

Is anyone using the Z7 for weddings and if so is anyone experiencing problems with photographers flashes. eg. If the clip is slowed down in post and a flash go's off do you notice pixelation at all.

Or maybe i should just buy a Z1

Rob.

You'll see pixelation on any long GOP structure, because the flash has disrupted so much of the image. Doesn't matter whether it's a Z1 or Z7

With the above issue as always being potential, yes. The Z7 is a great camcorder. I like it better than any HDV camcorder I've seen to date.

The biggest problem I've run into with flashes and CMOS (which the Z7 has, but not the Z1) is the rolling shutter, where the flash can get cut in half - i.e., the upper or the lower half or quarter of the picture has the flash, but the the other half/quarter doesn't. Often the flash gets split between 2 frames and is barely noticeable, even in a still frame, because the flash isn't on the subject in the shot. I've seen this intercutting CMOS and CCD footage together and needing to use the flashes as sync points.

Not sure how that impacts your aesthetic sense, it goes quickly in real time, but might not look good in slow motion. OTOH, most flashes wouldn't look particularly good in slow motion anyway (in my opinion).
