converting sd to hd
by Carla Cameron on Jun 9, 2008 at 9:39:35 pm

Hello,

Right now I am using the Panasonic dvx100b camera. The TV network that I want to pitch our documentary series to only accepts videos in HD format. Can someone tell me if there are any great conversion products out there that converts Standard Def to High Def?

It sounds like I am putting the cart before the horse because we don't know if we will be licensed by them but we are starting to video very soon and I need to decide if I should recommend getting an HD camera or convert from SD to HD.

Thank you

Carla

I wouldn't rush right out and purchase an HD camera without a contract. I would shoot SD in 16:9 and produce a short to show what you can do. It is the content they are looking for and the delivery requirements come during the negotiations. You need to show them your passion for the project and there is no reason you can't do it with an SD wide screen DVD. If you do want to shoot in HD then just find a DP with an HD camera that you can edit with. I know that you only get a few minutes with the decision makers, they just want the big picture not the small details. I would just show them the flavor of the show in a 5-7 minute piece.

Now to answer your question yes there are some software programs out there that either you may have with your EDL or you can purchase. DSE has recommended a software program, Topaz. I have found hardware to always be a superior up convert but this may not be the case anymore. I don't have any experience with Topaz. Software conversions take alot of time to render and hardware converts in real time.

I'm sure you could find a post house with a Teranex box that would do a great job too.

At the plugin level, Red Giant's 'Instand HD' is very good, and cheap.
Some of our 25p DVCAM material shot on a DSR450 up-rez'd to 720p OK. I
wouldn't fancy its chances at 1080p though.

If I remember rightly, Instand HD will even up-rez to 2K providing
your PC's upto it.

Recommended.

Darren.
