Playing out HDV 1080i60 to Sony HVR M15E Deck
by Jen Dunbar on May 23, 2008 at 1:48:49 pm

Hey,

Hoping someone might be able to help me with the settings for playing out a quicktime file from Final Cut 5.1.4.

My original file is HDV1080i60, I've imported it into Final Cut and set my sequence settings to the following:

Framesize: HD (1440x1080) (16:9)
Video Rate: 25
Compressor: HDV1080i
Pixel Aspect Ratio: HD (1440x1080)
Field Dominance: UPPER (ODD)

I've set my Sony HVR M15E Deck settings to HDV and 60i, and I've turned the iLink off.

The problem seems to be that when I then go into my Final Cut Audio/Visual settings, it says that the firewire is missing. I've tried turning the iLink on the deck on, but this only gives me an option for Apple Firewire NTSC (720x480), not one for (1440x1080), and when I've tried to play it out on that setting I get an error message on the deck.

If anyone knows how to solve the problem or can let me know if any of my settings are incorrect, some advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Jen

p.s. Incidentally, I'm playing out to a Sony DV tape, might this be an issue?

I'm sitting here working with my MBP and have my Z1U connected so I just tested a Print to Video HDV clip and here is what I know. The M15 Deck or any other HDV recorder (Z1U) must have the source video "Conformed" and this means that the deck doesn't have an HDV encoder so the EDL needs to conform or make an HDV recordable signal. One thing to keep in mind when working with any ilink/firewire device is you should always connect while the power is turned off with both computer and deck. I always connect the deck first then to the computer. Too many people have grounded out the firewire ports on the decks or cameras. The other thing to keep in mind is to make the proper setting to the deck first before any cable is connected, in my experience any changes while the cable is connected won't take effect. So in the menu on the deck you should find Rec In/Out and VCR should be either Auto or HDV, then ilink Conv is set to OFF. Now you can turn off both deck and computer and connect the firewire. turn on the deck then the computer open Final Cut and open your project, if your sequence is HDV 60i then you can Print to Video and have a blank tape ready in the deck, you should see FC conforming the video and then a message that will say Start the recorder and click. This is a crash edit recording.

Good Luck

Are you just trying to preview? Or print a tape?

If you are wanting to preview the video on an external monitor, you can't do it through FireWire. You have to have a card or box to process the video between your computer and external monitor. Probably the best option if you do not want to upgrade your system or external monitor is the Matrox MXO. B&H has it for $900. Or you can go with the Black Magic Intensity, which is $250, but you need an open PCIe slot and a monitor that will accept HDMI in. Both of these solutions will give you an accurate display on an external monitor.

If you are not concerned about having an accurate external display, you can still work around the FireWire issue. After capturing all of your media, change your Easy Setup options to: Format: All Formats; Rate: All Rates; Use: DV-NTSC. Also be sure to change your deck settings to DV instead of HDV. Restart FCP and you should be good to go. You'll have video out, but it won't be the best quality. There are a lot of artifacts and it can be a bit choppy.

If you are wanting to print a tape, you have to use the Print to Video option as Michael mentioned.

I have found this article by Apple to be extremely helpful in my company's transition to HD with FCP. http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/FCP6_HD_and_Broadcast_Formats.pdf

Hope this helps.

by Jen Dunbar on May 27, 2008 at 3:50:31 pm

Hi guys,

Thanks very much for the responses but I'm still unable to play it out for some reason. I've followed the steps you laid out Michael (set the deck, turned the machines off, then connected all the cables before turning the deck then computer on) and this seems to have solved the 'missing firewire' issue.

It all looked good and I had no error messages when I hit Print to Video... but then unfortunately absolutely nothing seems to happen on the tape. I get the Final Cut message to press record on the deck, I hit play and record and then hit ok, the sequence plays on the computer screen, but it's as if there's nothing being sent to the deck. (I've tried going back and capturing but there's no video or audio signal on the tape, just timecode)

Have I messed up one of the output settings? I have the output for Print to Video in the Audio/Visual Settings set as HDV (1440x1080) 60i which I would presume it has to be.

Sorry to be a pain but this is driving me insane. Any further suggestions that don't include paying a fortune in a post production house?

p.s. And thanks for the Apple info link Mike, I'm sure it'll come in very useful.

Jen
As I was testing the other day for you I too had the first attempt fail, I don't believe Final Cut likes HDV and I would suggest you test a small sequence until you have it working. I would also check these connections and try another FW cable. How long of a piece is this? Why do you want to record back to HDV tape? is this to archive?

Good Luck

Re: Playing out HDV 1080i60 to Sony HVR M15E Deck
by Mike Johnson on May 27, 2008 at 4:39:19 pm

Jen,

I just did a test Print to Video and it worked with no problem. I'm using the HVR M15U, which I think, it the US version of the M15E?? Can't find much info about either. I've found that HDV is a very tricky format to work with. Here's what I went through to print to video:

- Verify these settings on your deck:
HDV/DV Sel - set to HDV
iLink Set - set to Off
- Be sure to create a new sequence after you have selected the Easy Setup options to match your recording format. In your first post you listed the settings for your sequence. Try creating a new sequence under the HDV 1080i60 Easy Setup and copy your edit into the new sequence.
- When you drop your first clip into the new sequence, click No when it asks if you want to change the sequence setting to match the clip settings. For some reason, things won't work right if the sequence is changed, even if the media was captured under the same settings. Not really sure what's going on here.
- After your edit is finished, set you in and out points in your sequence and select Print to Video.
- Check the Automatically Start Recording option and set the rest of your requirements for the print, then click ok.

Assuming there is little to no difference between the M15U and M15E, this should work.

One more thought about your settings. In your first post, you show your Video Rate at 25 and your deck set to 60i. This could be your problem. Are you using NTSC or PAL? If NTSC, I believe your Video Rate should be set at 29.97 and your deck set at 60i. That's how I work. If your using PAL, then your video rate should be 25 and your deck set to 50i. Double check your Easy Setup settings - if your using NTSC be sure to set your rate at 29.97, and use 1080i60; if your using PAL set your rate to 25, and use 1080i50. Then check to be sure your deck setting match. Under the "Others" menu, there is a 60i/50i Sel setting - this is what you want to verify. If you have to make any changes, restart your system. Once you have FCP running again, create a new sequence under the correct Easy Setup, and copy your edit into the new sequence without changing the sequence settings. That oughta do it.

Mike

Mike/Michael,

Sorry for being so crap at getting back to you and thanks very much for all your help. I finally got the sequence to play out after realising the 25 frame rate problem literally 5 minutes before you send your post Mike. In the end we decided to go with a Production House because there was a strange flicker on the playout and it was just taking too much time to mess around with it anymore.

But yeah, I appreciate your advice and I'm sure it'll come in handy some other time!

Cheers,

Jen

I am also using a HVR M15U Deck and I'm just beginning post on a 1/2 doc all shot in HDV1080i60. It sounds like it is problematic to print out to HDV as you have to conform (not totally clear on what that is), but I don't think I need to, as the final edit will go, via hard drive to the online editor.
But I will need to output mini-dvs for my co-producer to preview the work along the way.

* Is it better/easier to output to SDV on this deck?
* Can I do this if the project settings are HDV?
*do I need to change any settings, or create a new sequence with different settings to do this.

any thoughts are appreciated. I am to deliver an assembly cut in a week 1/2 and I was getting the picture that I was going to have headaches with the output. I've only worked with SD before as a very self-taught editor. This website is awesome...thanks so much.

Re: Playing out HDV 1080i60 to Sony HVR M15E Deck

Conforming rewrites the GOP sequence. The HDV format is written in an MPEG2 Long GOP (group of pictures) format. In short, this allows the HD video to fit within the same space as DV. When you edit in a native HDV sequence, your cuts, transitions, and effects will break the GOP sequence. In order to print to tape in HDV, this sequence must be rewritten, or conformed, to the correct standards.

If your project is not going to be mastered back to an HDV tape, then your best bet will be to change your render settings to ProRes 422. You'll save a little bit of time on the render.

As far as your preview tapes go, if you don't need them in HD, the best way to get your project to MiniDV is to select everything in your HDV sequence and copy paste into a DV sequence. Then you can Print to Video or Edit to Tape.

Thanks for the quick reply and the "conform" explanation!
a few more questions if you have time?

YOU SAID:"If your project is not going to be mastered back to an HDV tape, then your best bet will be to change your render settings to ProRes 422. You'll save a little bit of time on the render."

I have seen this suggestion in the FCP forum, but I do not see a selection for ProRest 422 anywhere in FCP 5 - the A/V settings, User preferences, or System settings. How do I find this and change this for my project? Also, FYI..I am using FCP 5, OSX 4.11, I do not have a capture card(KONA, etc). I'm using a Powerbook G4, 2 GB DDR SD RAM, 1.67 GHz with external hard drives for storage.

YOU SAID:"As far as your preview tapes go, if you don't need them in HD, the best way to get your project to MiniDV is to select everything in your HDV sequence and copy paste into a DV sequence. Then you can Print to Video or Edit to Tape."

I did this, but in the test clip, it unrendered in the DV seq. So if I am going to print out any previews in a DV sequence, I will need to render the whole segment before printing out?

One more thing...

YOU SAID:
[As far as your preview tapes go, if you don't need them in HD, the best way to get your project to MiniDV is to select everything in your HDV sequence and copy paste into a DV sequence. Then you can Print to Video or Edit to Tape.]

I tried this with two short clips in a new DV seq. Then I had to render. But when I printed to video on the deck, the video came through fine on the test tape but no audio. Also, I think I see some kind of jitter or shake in the video. I would have to look more footage printed out to be sure. Any thoughts on that or the no audio? I was not totally what settings to change to export to NTSC from a project that has been set up as HDV.

Re: Playing out HDV 1080i60 to Sony HVR M15E Deck

FCP5 doesn't support ProRes 422 rendering. Sorry for the confusion.

When you copy paste into a new Dv sequence, you will have to render it. But that should go faster than conforming your HDV sequence. Basically you have to choose between conforming and rendering. Your render files for your HDV sequence will not carry to the DV sequence because the settings are different.

As far as the jitter and no audio, without knowing your settings and what you did, I'm not really sure. If you have audio in your sequence and it is not muted, then you likely have an issue somewhere between your print to video settings and deck settings. For the jitter - make sure you change your Easy Setup and deck settings to DV NTSC before printing the tape.

Hey Mike,

Thanks a lot, this worked for me!

I have a problem though:

I'm editing a fishing show for Extreme Angler on WFN. The first six shows I'm editing are SD, the rest after that are HD...The problem is, is that each show will have an HD intro, (so the 6 SD shows will have HD intros)

Should I down convert the HD intro for the SD shows, and THEN print to tape? Or is there another way?

Thanks!

Robbie

Robbie,

The best thing to do is convert your footage to match your delivery format. If your delivery is in SD, there is no reason to upconvert to HD, just to downconvert later. If your delivery is in HD, then you should upconvert your SD footage to HD then edit. Let me know what your delivery format is, then we can work on how best to get there.

Well Mike, the first 6 shows are in SD, but the intro to all 19 shows, will be in HD.

So just export my HD footage to SD for the first SD 6 shows?

The first six shows are in SD (like I said, just want to make it clear) and they are shot on the GL1.
so 4:3.

The intro to each show (in HD) is shot 1080i60i on the SONY Z1U.

The reason the first 6 are in SD and the rest are in HD is because the station wants their shows in HD now...so later in the season we bought an HD camera, but we had already done 6 shows in SD.

Thanks so much, you can reply to rcomo@waterandoil-productions.com also if you wish

I'm having the same problem...
I read all the threads and followed all the instructions, but with no result.

When I do "print to tape" no HDV images go to the HVR-M15.

I even changed all the settings and tried a simple NTSC DV sequence. "Print to tape" with "automatic Start recording" enabled, the HVR-M15 start to record. I can see the video in my computer but nothing goes on the tape.
Now even on the audio/video setting-> video playback and audio playback are set to firewire but nothing comes out.
That's strange because I have used this setting in the past.
I believe it's something related to FCP, because I use also quicktime DV Video on Pro Tools with the same firewire cable, HVR-M15 connected to a monitor, and I tell Pro tools to send the video thru firewire, and it works! I have my video on the monitor!

Any suggestions to resolve the DV issue, as this may resolve the HDV issue I am having?

Should I delete some preferences? If so, which one?

thank you.
