I have a project on a timeline in FCP, in HDV. Shot on a Sony Z1U. How can I quickly and easily turn that timeline into SD so that I can more easily add in some other quicktime movies that are taking forever to "conform" to HDV?

Russ,
Export your HDV sequence as a QuickTime file. Within your project, create a new sequence & change the settings to DV, and just import your HDV QT file & drop it into the new sequence.

If you export as a QT movie you won't have the option to change formats. If you export using "Quicktime Conversion" then you can choose any format you wish. If you go the QT Conversion route then choose to export using the DV NTSC Anamorphic codec.
But perhaps you can save yourself a couple of steps by first creating a new DV NTSC Anamorphic sequence, copy and paste your HDV sequence into it, render, export and you're done. Before you render just do a quick check of some of the HDV clips' scaling and aspect ratio properties to make sure everything looks good in the DV NTSC Anamorphic sequence. Then you're good to go.

Russ,
Definitely export using the simple export QT file, and yes, it will export as HDV. Thats fine. When you bring it back into FCP & drop it into a DV sequence, FCP will re scale it just fine. It will be leterboxed so if you bring in DV clips to use along with it, you will need to letterbox them if you want them to look the same. As Don mentioned, you can just drag the HDV sequence into a DV sequence, but I've run into problems with this. Slow motion clips that were fine in HDV played very stuttery in the DV sequence. After I started exporting the HDV QT file & bringing it back in, all was fine. If you export using QT conversion, you are going to re compress your HDV sequence which you want to avoid. Just exporting it as a QT file won't compress it. Of course you will need to render the DV sequence. Hope this works out for you.
