Damaged DV tapes or problem with Z1?
by Kelvin Ha (Kelvin_Ha) on May 2, 2008 at 12:13:27 pm

Hi,

I have a problem with my HVR-Z1P.

I recently had two tapes that had damaged portions after shooting.

The picture would freeze, the TC would freeze, and then it would skip to a couple of seconds ahead. Sometimes, the visual just goes black for a couple of seconds.

On checking the tape, I noticed that the top portion of the tape is crumpled and looks like it has been chewed up. But only at the top portion which accounts for less than 1/4 of the width of the tape.

This doesn't happen on the entire tape, just portions of it. For example, on one tape it lasted for about 6 mins before becoming normal again. On another tape, it happened towards the end of the recording.

Could it be a faulty tape or could it be the camera eating up the tape? Out of my last 3 tapes, this happened to two of them.

If the Z1 is damaging the tape, would I see the entire portion of the tape looking damaged or would it be just the top portion?

Any ideas of suggestions?

Can you use a tape in another recorder, to make sure the tape is fine, then try it in your problematic camera and see if it chews on it?
