Consumer Canon HDV played on a Sony Deck?
by Liz Smith on Apr 24, 2008 at 5:21:53 pm

Quick Q:

If I shoot footage on a Canon HV30 HDV camcorder, can I put the tape in a Sony HVR-M15U and capture without format problems? The Sony deck is throughput to FCP through HD-SDI/Kona card - no worries on that end. I just know that there's a few flavors of HDV and want to make sure the Canon HDV cameras play nice with the Sony deck.

Thanks!!
Liz

If you shoot 60i with the Canon, the M15 will have no issues.
If you shoot 24p or 30p with the Canon, the M15 will not digitize the media. You'll need the M35 for that.

Interesting... Is that format-based? or a manufacturer-based?

ie. Is the same true if I got, say, the Sony HDR-HC9 camcorder?

thanks!

Sony now has introduced the M15AU,M25AU and the M35AU decks that can deal with the multiple flavors of HDV, right? Is the deck you are referring to the M35AU deck?
M15AU =Component out
M25AU = Component & HDMI out
M35AU = Component & HD/SD-SDI out

Just more models for us to keep track of.

I'm referring to the M15U. I'll be going out component through a converter to HD-SDI.

It sounds like the new M15AU will support 30p tape, no? I haven't bought the deck yet, so if that's the case I'll wait to get the AU.

The M10, M15, and M25 only deal with Sony-flavored HD in 24, 30p, and 60i, and Canon 60i over firewire out.
The M35U reads JVC 24p/30p/60p, Canon 24f, 30f, and 60i, Sony 24p, 30p, and 60i. In other words, it reads everything.

[Douglas Spotted Eagle] "The M35U reads JVC 24p/30p/60p, Canon 24f...."

Wow Spot... is that confirmed and honest-to-goodness true?? Finally a deck that will read Canon 24f would be a great thing indeed... at least in our little shop (lots of XLH1 shooting here).

Todd, yes, it honest-to-God-works. :-)
I've had em' all in the deck. They work well. I didn't believe it either, not til I saw it.
Wow. Only took *someone* 4 years to make it happen.

Thanks Spot!... you can't see, but I'm quitely overjoyed to hear that. No more wearing out cameras as decks, or looking like a yahoo amateur in front of a client with a camcorder cabled into the suite.

I miss spoke of the M35, I believe the A may have been added to the M15 & M25 decks to delineate the multi HDV format play back feature that was added to each of these other decks. For those who want to know the U stands for USA model (NTSC) like the P stands for PAL.

Actually, the "P" stands for "Pacific" like the "E" stands for "Europe" like the "J" stands for "Japan" etc.

This is done in an attempt to avoid/combat grey marketing.

So is it true the multi HDV playback feature isn't just on the M35 it will be on the M15AU and the M25AU too?

I'm told it is, but since I haven't seen an "A" model deck in working conditions, I don't know the answer. We do have an M35, and it works as advertised.
[edit] It's very important folks not get these confused with the *current* M15 and M25 camcorders.

[edit 2] TMK, there is no M35"AU" but only the M35 and it's various regional prefixes. So yes, Liz, you're understanding is correct. You need an M35U if you want to start capturing/playback/Xfer right now.

I would assume the M35 deck didn't get the A because it is an all together new unit to the Sony HDV deck lineup and was not altered. Why be consistent with model designations.....
I did see these "A" decks at NAB and they should be out soon.

Good Luck

Oh, my o my :-) If I could only count the number of times I've seen products and features at NAB that didn't end up in the final product. EX1 is a great example of that.
I saw em' too (FWIW, I was doing sessions for Sony camcorders in SU233 during the show), but that doesn't mean I trust they'll be everything they're announced to be when they ship.
Strange how firmware sometimes goes one way or another between the announcement and shipping phases of a product.
But...it's entirely likely they'll be as advertised in the multiple format area. We'll know in a few months.

FWIW: I just received an email today from J&R stating that the HVR-M15UA is now available. This VTR is suppose to playback 24p/30p HDV footage. Not sure if Sony us planning a firmware update or some other kind of upgrade program for owners of the original M15U...I emailed them a month ago and got no response, but at least there's now an affordable VTR that has "universal" HDV playback that will make life a little easier for Editors & perhaps help prolong this (vulnerable) format's life-expectancy.

To confirm:

- the M35U (not the new AU) will read all flavors of HDV and export them all via HD-SDI
- the M15U and M25U (not the new AU) will only read Sony flavors and Canon 60i via firewire (and not component???)

I've got a Kona HD-SDI card and want to go HDV into the computer that way and avoid firewire. Will need to get a deck in the next few weeks, so it sounds like the new models (AU) are out of date range for me. But now I'm thinking I should get the M35U to allow for other formats coming in in the future....
