is HDV/HD 60p/50p the future NTSC/PAL standards conflict?

guys, the problem with analog video is that you need to know if they are using pal or ntsc and buy compatible products for this standard. meaning you can not play pal video on ntsc tv.

i thought the standard is all same for HD but i'm still confused about the 60p/50p (or 60i/50i if there's 50i). lately we bought a slim lcd tv from japan with only rf and hdmi input. we used hvr-z7p to record hdv (using 1080/50p)video on tape and played it back and send the output to the tv via hdmi, and NO AUDIO/VIDEO whatsoever showed up. then i use hvr-z1p because is supports both pal and ntsc. i recorded hdv video using 1080/60i format. then i took out the tape from z1 and put it on z7 (coz z1 has no hdmi out) for playback to hdmi monitor, then voila! there's a video out on the monitor.

my initial conclusion is we are facing the same dilemma as before because hd equipment are not always compatible with each other. meaning when your shooting hd/hdv you still need to take into account all the technicals like 60i,50p, etc...plus add the fact on having 720/1080 resolution, more complicates things!!!

cheers!

There will *always* be a frequency diff, simply due to different electrical systems. US, Canada, Japan are 60Hz electrical systems, most of the rest of the world is 50Hz.

The days of resolution differences are over, but the frequency differences will always be there.

so the "difference in frequency" can be equated to "difference in standard".

60i camera must be played in 60i deck and viewed on 60i monitor.
same is true with 50p.
so we're still living in pal/ntsc dilemma, only now it's hd :)

am i right if i say the only way of making both ends meet is to use 300p scanning?

No, this isn't correct. *most* 50i HD displays can display a 60i signal, and vice versa, just as *most* newer HD displays may also manage a native 24p signal.
This doesn't mean all of them can, but most of them.

hi Douglas,

I understand that most monitors play both 50p and 60i/60p as well as 720 and 1080.

My point is that you still need to be aware whether you're using 50p/60i etc...when you forget about that and focus more on creative shooting.

anyways, just have to live by that i think.

also for a sales point of view is a big issue since i'm in singpore and we are using pal here. i can not sell cameras, camcorder, deck, etc. to philippines because they are using ntsc. same issue for hd (they are using 60i we are using 50p).

cheers!
