So if it was YOUR mother-in-law....

Seriously, I love my mother-in-law. She's among the world's great storytellers, and after some recent medical trouble, we're reminded that, well, it's time to start preserving some of those stories.
I want HD, and I want a small camera. I love tapeless, but I'm willing to live with tape if it's smart. Sub-$1K.
So forget about abstract quality and workflow stuff - if it was YOUR family memories, and you had a limited time to preserve them for a long time...HDV or AVCHD?
I'm not even looking for a specific camera recommendation...although I'm happy to take any advice....just some ideas about what you'd do.

I love tape.. it just lasts... I am often digitizing footage from 15 year old betaSP tape onto drives & raids that have replaced many times... drive scare me for long term...
that said I would get something that has a good FULL AUTO, you would be surprised at the way grandma will open up to 9 year old grand-daughter, even if she got the camera rolling, but will be tight lipped if you were to ask the same questions... also its mighty cute for the kids to interview...
My Sony HC3 works well enough for me... tiny, easy to bring anywhere, 60 minutes record time, easy down-convert for SD DVD burning now, tape archive for when ever APPLE PUTS A DANG BLU_RAY IN A COMPUTER!!!
good luck
Thanks,
Harry.

I'd go with HDV for the convenience of shooting lots of continuous footage without worrying about having enough memory cards. In a few more years when memory cards are dirt cheap and AVCHD cameras are better then maybe that will be a preferred choice, but not so much today.
For cameras consider the Canon HV30 or Sony HC9. I have a Sony HC1 and love it for personal use.
