LED screens
by Core van der Hoeven on Apr 14, 2008 at 7:24:21 pm

It's probably not the right forum, but I don't know where else to post this
I'm editing footage wich has to be screened on LED screens
Material is on HDV, I edit in prores(lot of effects are needed)but nobody seems to know how the screens react on this HDV material; contrast, interlaced or not(the HDV is 1080i),
HD or SD.
Is there maybe a LED screen guru out here who can help me a little

Thanks, Core

See if you can find the manufacturer of the LED screens; they should have the proper technical information.

Yes, it seems it's phillips but I'm not shure, it takes ages before they(the govermental institute) give me the info
In the meanwhile I'm already colorgrading, slowing things down
'cause of the thight deadline

thanks for your reply,

I did a screen for a large arena last year. Not a jumbotron, but a smaller LED screen. Like mentioned, I called the manufacturer and they told me their specs. I just about freaked. It was like 500x200.

So, what I did was design my video and graphics in After Effects using a custom window size that matched the arena screen. I did some tests and sent the A/V guy at the arena a few samples until I figured out what worked and what didn't. Obviously, small type didn't. Bold graphics worked best as well as keeping the motion speed down and not too fast.

If I remember correctly, the manufacturer specs were AVI files. I hope this helps a bit, but, as always, ever manufacturer will be different. Testing and getting feedback was the key for me.

Thanks, it helps, the're designing the graphics at the moment
so we can keep it in mind
We are slowing down almost everything(20 screens in 2 subway stations, we don't want to make the travelers dizzy) so we are on the right track
Don't know the size of the screens jet, something like 2 by 3 meter is the answer

2x3 meters doesn't tell you much. Find out what the number of LED's horizontal and vertical is. That relates to resolution.

Good luck and post your experience when it's finished.

The LED screens I have passing knowledge of work in a 1:1 pixel-to-LED ratio. As Ernie says, you will want to know the number of H and V elements, and probably use a custom screen resolution; for the deliverable files at least.

Thanks for your input, I will certainly post the result, although that might take some time, the city council and several other civil servants have to check the programm so we insult no one by showing private parts or what so ever
