Seems like everybody in the world has the EX1 in stock and B&H doesn't. I usually really respect them for their promptness, but they've really dropped the ball on this one.

[cadge31]"Wow,

"Everybody?" As far as I can tell, everybody is filling back orders. At least that's the case with the NYC dealers I know of. I had to go to 4 different places to get all the pieces.
Armatos (where I got my camera on pre order), Adorama for the Schneider Optics B&W Clear Glass protection, AbelCine for the U60 battery and 16GB card, B&H for the Lowepro camera backpack with wheels.
I don't think any of the above have enough cameras to do anything beyond fill backorders though.

My boss ordered from B&H as soon as they started accepting orders and we haven't heard anything since. I keep thinking the thing will show up any day, and it just hasn't.
I suppose this is going to be a VERY popular camera.

But when did they start accepting orders?
I ordered from Armatos (NYC) in late October (was #3 on their list) and got the camera about Dec 20 when they got 10 cameras in (all spoken for).
At a place like B&H you might have ordered on the first day and have had scores ahead of you. I'd believe they'd get larger shipments than Armatos though.
There'd been delays in the shipping too given a production issue since fixed. That's why Armatos didn't get shipment until mid/late Dec.
Yes this going to be a very popular camera and I think there are those trying to spread FUD about it (my conspiracy theory).

Hey Craig,
After a little more mucking about of my own, shooting the "HDV" setting is going to be the ticket until all of the shooting is finished for these projects.
I'm feeling pretty comfortable with the camera overall, and the lens controls have reminded me of how much I loved the full manual SLR tucked away in my closet.
The picture profiles option is still beyond me as I don't really understand the options in the menu for that, so I'll need to get up to speed on that... maybe even RTFM.
Re: B&H EX1 by Craig Seeman on Dec 31, 2007 at 5:52:39 pm
The manual only gives the driest explanation of what functions do without any examples to grasp concepts. One has to test and see what changing the gamma curve or knee does to grasp it and one doesn't always know what to look for if one is new to it.
I know a far amount of this in theory but you kinda have to hope you're shooting a subject so you see the changes as you tweak them. It's complex. Sony actually has a couple of examples buried on their website but they're really poor in my opinion. I hope someone comes out with good training material specific to Picture Profiles. It's hard to understand without visual examples.

I was afraid that would be the case. I'll have to wait on that then... I have editing to do, so futzing with amorphous camera settings ad nauseam isn't really in the cards at the moment.

Aren't most manuals like that? Pro cameras expect that you know what you're doing for the most part.
Try a Google search for XDCAM EX1 training.
BTW, I see you responded to my other post, halfway. Can one record to DV from the firewire or composite while simultaneously recording to SxS cards? Thanks.

I was lucky enough to get my EX1 back on December 21 and it's been great so far. (sold my Z1 just in time before it becomes a dinosaur). I agree completely with the comments about how confusing and uninformative the manual is.
This week I finally splurged and ordered a copy of Vortex Media's "Mastering the Sony PMW-EX1". GREAT INVESTMENT!!! In 3 hours last night watching it I learned more about the EX1 than I found out in three weeks of owning the camera. I feel like I just had a one-on-one training session with somebody who really knows the camera inside and out. The last few chapters on post and archiving with FCP were icing on the cake. If you've got an EX1 -- get his DVD today!!! http://www.vortexmedia.com/EX1DVD/EX1DVD.html
