HDV - Offline to online editing issue
by adventusfilms on Nov 27, 2007 at 3:29:43 pm

Hey there

I have 8 miniDVs shot on HDV from a short film that an editor is going to cut for us and he wants to do an offline edit in SD first naturally. The problem is that I have timecode breaks on my raw tapes. As far as I know, our XH-A1 won't record an HDV copy for a consistent timecode...but I don't even know if I'd want to if I could.

What's the best way to hand over the media to the editor so he can handle an offline and online edit? Our plan right now is to go back to HDV.

Chris,

If you're going back to HDV and your source tapes already have TC breaks in them, you'd be crazy to try an offline-online workflow. Even with more intensive codecs like DVCProHD or XDCAM, etc. the old way is pretty much gone. Just capturing all of your footage the first time will be hard enough if you really have TC breaks in all of your tapes. Capture and edit in native HDV all the way. Your chances of being driven insane are much lower.

If you want tapes w/o breaks just record deck to deck (cameras work) and let the recorder set new timecode for the whole tape and it will fill in the gaps. The timecode won't be the same, but you don't want the broken timecode. If you don't have decks/cameras, you could to a live capture of the whole tape and then put that back to a new tape.

Once more for emphasis... trying to do an offline-online will seriously over-complicate your life.

Like Zak says if you have time-code breaks and you want to do an offline you are in for headaches.

Why do you want to do an offline of your HDV in DV anyway. The file sizes are the same and so is the data rate. You don't really gain anything.

Honestly, I don't care what he does with it, as long as it gets edited and conformed to the highest quality I can get before taking it to get mixed and CC'd. It was what the editor asked for. But I'll definitely refer to your info when we talk. Trust me, I'm glad you feel this way because it's how I felt initially and it saves me oodles of work. Maybe some people are just gluttons for harder and unnecessary workflows.

Thanks

Chris
