HVR 1500 vs M10u...Faster Captures? accurate recaptures? Eliminates phantom TC breaks?

Hi
we are using the M10u and the for capturing into 2 FCP Systems. One system has a kona LH we use to capture Analog from the M10 into DVCPROHD, controlling it via firewire. The other system we also capture analog into DVCPRO50, using a LANC adapter box to control from the RS422 interface on our IO LA,
in both cases it is ridiculously difficult to capture, as well as recapture, anythin g shot HDV.
the machine takes a long time to cue, it often aborts or says "cannot find tc" AND it puts these
"random" code breaks into shots that have no codebreaks, making it necessary to capture multiple clips to get any shot over a minute into the system.
has anyone solved some or all of these issues by using the HVR 1500? please chime in with any observations you may have

Bob-
I don't have experience with the 1500, but have a ton of experience with machine control from sony HDV firewire. Some things that we've learned:
1. disconnect all other devices from the firewire bus you are using for machine control
2. make sure the deck AND the editing software are set the same TC setting (drop/non-drop)
3. when using the Kona LH for analog input and firewire for machine control the most stable setting we've found is DVCPro Firewire (I know-doesn't make sense). In Final Cut you have to have the log and capture window open and click the capture settings tab to set to DVCPro Firewire (if you try set machine control via A/V settings FCP wont let you proceed). The decks iLink down covert needs to be set to ON.
With these settings everything seems to work. Obviously, the M-10 has lousy queing and shots have to have at least 5 seconds of preroll but we've actually been able to use batch capture with these settings.

Hi Bob,
Our company makes a line of video converters that work with the HDV decks, including deck control.
We make HDV to HD/SD-SDI converters and HDMI to HD/SD-SDI converters with RS-422 to 1394 deck control conversion. The HDV converter is for decks like the M10, M15, while the HDMI is for decks/cameras that have HDMI output (V1U, M25, HC5, etc). A number of our customers use it daily without any timecode break issues (we spent a lot of time working through the timecode in HDV). Also, a number of customers use our converters in place of a HVR-1500 (much less money).
We have a M25 deck and various cameras that we test regularly with great results.

Re: HVR 1500 vs M25 using HDMI and HD-Connect MI by Michael Palmer on Sep 11, 2007 at 2:03:24 am
As John said there is an alternative to the 1500 using the M25 deck together with the HD-Connect MI from Convergent Design (about half the price and all digital) and yes it is amazing. I'm producing a new show using HDV for acquisition on remote field shoots and converting to DVC Pro HD 720p on capture (completely digital) during the process. I believe in CD products and I use this method.

John
My configurations are troublesome at best, and downright unworkable at least.
in one room i have a Kona LHe and i control the m10 via apple firewire.
Obviously the ballistics of the machine are poor, which adds a great deal of time to cueing, but i am getting phantom tc breaks in the middle of shots (as i mentioned above)
in the other room i have an IO la. I have a 422 to lanc converter, and i control the deck via lanc
and i get similar results.
even when i have nothing else on my apple firewire bus, and i am capturing HDV native, the deck sucks.
Sooooo where is this going?
obviouls the M10 transport is not really made for shuttilng tapes the way we as pros have come to expect (the deck is the camera without the lens). BUT is the m25 a better transport? my impression was that the 1500 is the real deal in terms of tape handling. how does the m25 stack up? this is really the burning issue for me

Hi Bob,
I don't have any experience with the HDV-1500 or the M10. My experience with the other HDV decks (M25, BR-HD50) isn't too bad. They aren't a UVW-1800, but it is possible locate a timecode and batch capture in a reasonable amount of time. I know the M10 had the tape transport from the Z1U camera, while the M15, M25, and 1500 have much better tape transports (including support for DVCAM tapes).

Hi Bob,
I have the HVR-1500 and use it with my Media 100 via the AJA BOB & capture card. Either SDI or HDSDI out (with 9 pin control cable for frame accuracy) of the 1500 into M100 with terrific pics.
SDI back into HVR for pristine DVCAM or DV pics, again frame accurate.

I recently switched all of my DV Cam decks to the HVR 1500 and in both a live and studio world they are great, I have heard the HDSDI card is the same as the much higher end but for a realistic price. I have captured both firewire and HDSDI from the same source and the difference is there. Transport is really fast as long as you disable the PB head while tape searching.
