Great stuff for this camera: looks like they addressed most of the shortcomings with other HD cameras under $10K. One possible oversight though could be the lack of a LANC input, which apparently isn't mentioned anywhere in the brochure. Can't wait to see some reviews and sample footage!

To me the massive oversight is the fact that is does not have a removable lens. Sigh.... if it wasn't for that I'd be the first in line.

But then folk would complain that they can't get a good lens for less than 15k.
A fixed lens assures that the imager and glass are properly matched up at a variety of levels.
Removable glass brings on a whole different set of issues. Just ask JVC about cheap camera bodies and expensive lenses. It's not easy, not cheap.
Or, they could fix their own lens manufacturing and new mount so that no one could mount any lens but Sony's to the camera, and potentially do away with the problem, but the lenses would still be very expensive.

it's not at all a "massive oversight" but rather a planned development/featureset for the camera. In its price class, there is nothing that compares.

I agree with DSE that having a fixed lens is a good design choice for this camera in this price range - if you really want removable lenses those cameras are available at a corresponding price. Or you could get the Canon XL-H1 if you need a removable lens option on a relatively affordable camera, but that's not what Sony is trying to compete with here.

A bigger oversight for this camera may be the apparent lack of a LANC input. There is a lens zoom controller port, but what about other remote camera controls?

Yeah, I know, Kevin, the XLH1 is my primary shooter, have a couple of them... and they are in relatively the same ballpark pricewise.

God knows I'm a fan of Sony though... I'm sitting right now surrounded by racks and racks of Sony gear. To me, being able to put my own glass on a camera is one of the things that kicks a "prosumer" camera up into the pro level.

But... as you said, that's not the market that Sony is chasing with this.

Yeah, I know, Kevin, the XLH1 is my primary shooter, have a couple of them... and they are in relatively the same ballpark pricewise.

But not with a good lens. The lens that ships with the Canon XLH1 is pretty raunchy by comparison to what's available for it, at nearly double the cost of the cam package. We have a couple XLH1's, love em for what they are.

FWIW, the lens package on the EX beats tail off of any HDV camcorder you've ever seen at any price point.

Ok, I'll stand corrected, DSE... not a massive oversight in the marketing world... just a massive oversight for me in particular, ha.

I'd just love to be able to use my sweet primes on it (with our DoF converter... not sticking it on front of the stock lens).

But of course, I'm in the minority... Sony is better off selling thousands of them to other people than one of them to me.

Still, I reserve the right to say "Man oh man I wish that thang had a removable lens."

:)

Todd: if you can get your hands on an EX1 once it ships, please post your thoughts on how it compares to the XL-H1 with the stock lens. I guess your comment shows that we still can't get *everything* in a camera costing under $10K, but man oh man the EX1 sure looks like one hot ticket...

Hey Kevin....

Oh I wouldn't be surprised if the EX1 lens didn't beat the pants off the XLH1's stock lens. I know there are a lot of people that don't really care for the XLH1 lens at all.

Even though I've shot with the cameras virtually daily for more than a year I still wouldn't be a good person to offer an opinion... I've probably only shot with the stock video zoom lens, oh, maybe three times... I'm a primes guy. The last time we needed one of the video zooms we had to look for them for almost an hour (they were packed away where they shouldn't have been).

Each time I did have to shoot with it, I do remember spending a lot of time cursing those infinitely-turnable focus rings... I think Sony is doing a great thing with the "conventional focus ring" setting.

Hi,

I was on the verge of buying the hvx-200 in the next couple of days....but now I am not sure anymore...the lense, the iris, the chips and the downcranking looks great on this sony pmw-ex1 camea...

the downfalll? I still can't beleive that there's not a dvcam or dv option in the settings...that just sucks...confess it or not....we still live in a sd world despite the fact we have great hd cameras out there....sony please don't mess a good product...and add an sd option to this camera and you'll have a winner...or at least a i-link downconwert when grabing to the computer....don't make this stupid mistake of not adding this option....

and one more question...does anyone know how will the sgpro adapter conform to the 1/2 chips of this camera....will it work properly....

best regards

cckid

The PMW-EX1 downconverts to SD with 1394 and analog component/composite video outputs.

Check out this article. This camera really does look great and it looks like Sony and B&H are going to be getting some of my hard earned cash.

Anyone know how the widest angle of the zoom compares to other camcorders, such as the Z1? I always wish it were a little wider.

How about the feel of the zoom rocker? Can you easily get slow speeds, creeps, etc., or does it lack control at the slow end?

It's certainly wider than our V1Us (37mm in 35mm parlance). The EX is 31.4mm in 35mm parlance. Reasonably comfortable wide, not too tunnel-vision.

Take care,
