Outputting to SD DVD: Color correct HDV in HD or SD?
by CathyCam on Aug 24, 2007 at 11:57:20 am

Hi all,

I'm going to be submitting my HDV film to festivals on SD DVDs. I don't have an external HD-DVD player, so I'd rather not run the risk of buying expensive discs that don't burn correctly. I'm about to begin color correction, and I am equipped with a secondary, 23" HD Apple Cinema Display monitor and the Matrox MXO, so I have the capibility to view my film in either broadcast-quality HD or SD. I will eventually (hopefully) be outputting to HDCAM once my film is accepted for screening. My question is, can I just color correct in HD now, or will I have more accurate results on my SD DVDs by color correcting in SD?

Setup:
Final Cut Studio 2
Quad-core Mac Pro
Primary display: 24" Dell UltraSharp 2407WFP
Secondary display: 23" Apple Cinema Display
Matrox MXO

Although you'll be dealing with a color space difference, (709 vs 601) you can effectively do either. However, if you're mastering to SD, I'd recommend C/C in SD and monitoring in SD for exact results.
Small reminder, be sure to check calibration on any external monitor for critical color correcion work.

producing 1920x1080 from HDV
by Robin1977 on Aug 31, 2007 at 12:16:14 pm

I am currently looking to produce my HDV footage into either HDV output or 1920x1080 into quicktime with photo jpeg compression. I am starting wiht windows avi files with cineform codec, and working with After effects7 and soon to be CS3, and the aim of this current project is to output for stock footage.
In the composition settings I am unsure as to whether to go with square pixel in the pixel aspect ratio or HDV 1080/DVC PRO HD 720 (1.33) and then use custom settings to set it to 1920x1080. I have tried both methods and still cant see a difference.
Please can someone help me on this matter, I am sorry if it sounds very naive but I am an image taker and this is new to me.
Also, can anyone tell me if it is beneficial to produce in both mediums, HDV and 1920x1080?

Partys over. Teach me.
