mixing DV & HDV
by Lee Schneider on Aug 10, 2007 at 2:22:20 pm

Just started shooting HDV & editing w/FCP Studio 2. Most of my projects will include older SD footage I need to incorporate into the project. I'll be bringing this footage (some of it old VHS) into FCP via firewire/mini DV. What is the best way to up convert the SD/DV footage so it will play full screen along with the HDV footage? I'm just using firewire at this point (no additional hardware, but will probably need to get something). Do I up rez the DV footage on input to match the HDV footage, or will the footage up rez upon output via an AJA card?

Thanks for any answers you can provide.

Lee

You can use compressor to up-convert it. But it is not going to look all that good. I would suggest down-converting the HDV.

First off are you going to SD for output? if so you could try this, Cut all the HDV you possibly can leaving holes for the DV material and then export the HDV sequence as SD, then re-import the .mov back into a DV sequence and insert the VHS/DV material. Resizing or up rezing with software (DV to HD) doesn't look to good. Or look into the AJA Kona 3 hardware solution to up rez.

Good Luck

Right now I'm shooting HDV & down converting from the camera & capturing as NTSC DV over firewire. I have the opportunity to start broadcasting the projects on a new HD TV channel, so I'd like to start working in an HDV workflow. And, from everything I've heard, even SD DVDs look better when they are shot/edited in HDV right up to the point of converting the file for final burn.

Is there an AJA Kona card that accomplishes this, and does it up rez during capture? I know it won't look as good as if it were shot in HD, but... there aren't any other options with this footage. It's old footage for documentary projects.

Thanks!

Lee

Call AJA and ask about the Kona 3, I believe it is the solution.

Aloha Lee,

The Kona 3 will up rez your footage, but won't change the aspect ratio. The inputs on the Kona 3 are all HDSDI and SDI, so you will need to either have a DV Firewire to SDI box or use an AJA converter that converts component to SDI. Sound may be an issue, we run everything through a deck that has SDI and AES EBU sound out so it all comes out in sync. Not sure about what happens when you bring in analog component and analog sound, talk to AJA about that. You will need a black burst generator to sync your deck and if you get the AJA card be sure to spend the extra dollars and get the K-Box, they are worth every penny.

Aloha,

Ken
