You ask for details of other people's approach to the problems posed by HDV. I convert my HDV shot exactly as yours to uncompressed HD through the Convergent Design HD-Connect. I then edit in HD with Media 100. To make SD DVD's I encode using BitVice which also does a very good quality downscale at the same time. I encode at a variable bit rate using the two passes offered by BitVice and it takes a long time, about six hours for a ten minute production. I then use Compressor to encode an audio ac3 file and Studio Pro to build and format and finally Titanium Toast to burn the disc. The results are pretty good but not as good a quality as tape.

David, I have Infortrend EonStor A08U-C2410 in an 8 Bay SATA-SCSI Desktop Enclosure. There are 8x400 drives and striped as Raid 5 to protect against drive failure. This means that I lose capacity but am safer. My total useable capacity is about 3.2 TB. It's a lot but as a documentary maker I need it! I am editing in Media 100 (11,5,1) and acquire my media as 8bit uncompressed HD. I think I have interpreted the spec correctly but I am no tecky.
