problem viewing from deck

I have some tapes that were shot on the Sony ZIU camera. I am trying to dub these tapes to MINIDV. I have the Sony HVR-M15U deck and I am trying to connect via firewire to a Panasonic DVX-100a to dub. I can play back MiniDV fine through the deck and view it on the Panasonic monitor. But nothing from the HDV. I set in the menu of the deck both auto and HDV but nothing. Unfortunately I don't have access to the camera anymore. Is there something I'm missing?

Dubbing from the Z1 to the DVX means you need to down convert to DV out of the Z1. These setting need to be changed with the firewire cable connected from the Z1. Turn of the Z1 disconnect the firewire cable, turn in back on in VTR mode, go into the menu, then find rec in/out, the find ilink conv and set this to ON for DV, or if need HDV then set to OFF.
Good Luck

"I set in the menu of the deck both auto and HDV but nothing."
Auto is not down converting. You need to control the firewire port yourself. You need to disconnect the firewire cable, open the Menu, go into rec in/out, then find the ilink conv and set to ON for DV or OFF for HDV going out the firewire port. This should fix your issue.
I hope you don't expect HDV dubs to your DV camera.

Thanks for continuing to help, Michael. But I'm still having issues:
"You need to disconnect the firewire cable,"
Done
"open the Menu, go into rec in/out, then find the ilink conv and set to ON for DV or OFF for HDV going out the firewire port." Set it to off for HDV.
Reconnected the firewire cable and I get a black screen with the HDV/DV display and some audio meters on the right, HDV1080i on the right. When I rewind the tape I can see timecode spinning, but when I play the screen goes back to blue and there is nothing except the display from my Panasonic.
"I hope you don't expect HDV dubs to your DV camera." Nope, I just want dubs to log footage and edit from. These are going into a majority DV piece.

You can't send out HDV and expect the DV camera to down convert it to DV, and you can't get a DV camera to make HDV. So set the deck to down convert to DV and you can make a DV dub. Am I making this clear?

Totally understood, Michael, and sorry to be a pain. Set in the menu to downconvert, reattached firewire cable. I noticed this time though that I got somewhat of an image though for a few seconds and then it went back to blue--them image was distorted kind of like old VHS tapes with that encrypting copy protection used to do. But still no luck. I really don't get it.
Also, someone told me that I need to be going into FCP to get it to work. That doesn't make sense to me. It seems I should be able to view it and dub it to DV using just a camera.

It sounds like you where successful down converting the signal out of the deck. Perhaps the Sony DV is not being recognized by the Panasonic. Or is their something you can reset on the Panasonic for basic DV. I don't know that camera so you'll need to see if it can be reset to some basic format of DV. I think it has a DV50 option and perhaps this can be changed. Do you have access to a Sony DV camera to make sure the M15 is doing what you need? One other try... while you are seeing this image can you wiggle the ends of the firewire cable and see if that helps clear up the problem.

I'm trying to record ON the HVR-M15U FROM my Panasonic AJ-SD930 via the firewire. I am also having no luck. Sony is closed for the weekend and I have 7.5 hours of tape to dub for a client. I hate to waste a weekend as it is raining here. Any ideas?
