I am wondering if the Canon V20 can be used to play 1080i HDV tapes shot on a Sony Z1U and output them with firewire? Has anyone tried this in the real world? Thanks in advance

I totally miss read this, it sounds like they are looking for an inexpensive deck for tape shot on a Sony HDV cam, right? I could supply a tape from the Z1 or V1 if this can help them. I would also like to see if my new MU25 deck would properly play the Canon recording of HDV. In fact I'd like to test if with all flavors of HDV and the various record modes.

Actually... I would like to see that too. We shoot a lot with the Canon XLH1, and if you shoot HDV at 24f as far as I KNOW you can ONLY play that back in the camera (or another Canon camera supporting 24f, such as the cheap HV20). You can play back STANDARD defintion 24f in any other deck (or at least you can in our Sonys), but not HD.
I would love to know if there is finally a deck available that can play that.

I think it is capable of playing it, however it can't send it down the firewire...which might limit it's usefulness.
I got some interview footage from a crew we hired that shot 720p HDV on what I believe was a JVC cam. Since the end product would end up downconverted to DV and put on the web, I used our Sony HVR-1500 to playback and output the tape as analog component along with timecode out to a DSR-1500a recording DV. Never tried outputting 720p material with the deck's HD-SDI.
The nifty thing about the HVR-1500 is that the LCD display will show you that the tape you're playing back is 720p.

I believe this HV20 unit shoots 24p and converts to 29:97 on the tape like my Sony V1U does.
It may be a cool little camcorder.
Good Luck
