The company I work for doesn't want to spring for the rental costs on HD monitors, can I run S-Video out of a Sony Z1U to an SD monitor and still get an image just for monitoring purposes?

You're talking about monitoring during production right?
The answer would be yes. The Z1u has the ability to do the downconversion from HDV to SD component (via proprietary cable), svideo or composite (using 3 ring mini-din AV cable).

So, in general, S-video will serve as a means to send a viewable signal to a SD monitor? I've tried it with our Panasonic HVX-200 and it works. Does this mean that any camera with an S-video out will work to an SD monitor during the production phase?

Theoretically, yes...I wouldn't try it with out testing it out to make sure if it is really important. Different products may behave differently. I know for sure that the Z1u does.

I feel I must add that I have never been happy with the S-Video output. "Viewable" is debatable.

HD downconverted to SD over svideo to boot. Not useful for gauging color or focus...but it will do in a pinch for monitoring action, camera movement and composition during a shoot.

Yes, the Z1 will downconvert. But if you are connected to an edit system by firewire, like Final Cut Pro, ou won't be able to view the HDV through the camera. Has to do with the compression factor of HDV. The new version of FCP is rumored to allow this when it is released.

Huh? Sorry, but I can view HDV from the camera just fine in DVRack. And I can see it in Premiere Pro's capture window right up until I try to capture, so it can be done quite easily.

I have never tried shooting HDV and seeing DV. That would be useless in my opinion, so I never tried it.

I think he's meaning that in FCP while editing HDV, you can't use the camera to do d/a conversion to preview on an external monitor.

Ah, thanks. That makes sense.

I use a Matrox Parhelia APVe with component outputs for HD out to the HD monitor. It is not possible to view through the firewire, that's correct.

How much, pray tell does Sony and/or 3rd parties sell that dreaded "proprietary S-Video cable" for?

With the MXO downscaler, I'm using the following workflow with my MacBook, capture HDV, use the MXO downscaler and the little Y cable they supply, and right now editing in my hotel room on their TV

And I regularly use my Blackmagic Decklink Extreme to downconvert to SD (S-video) from and HDV edit in FCP
