HDV encoding to HD (QT/ WMV HD)

Hi all! First time poster here and newbie so please be nice... =)

I am capturing in 1080i 60 with my Sony V1U and editing natively in Final Cut Studio. I now have my 20 minute HDV video ready for export...here is the catch...I want to create a workflow where I can essentially keep the HD quality image but compress it to a reasonable size (i.e., a 20 minute clip to ~1.5GB). I intend to host the video on the internet for download via bittorrent.

Things I have tried:

Encoding with Quicktime pro (QT file)
Encoding with Flip4mac WMV Studio Pro HD (trying for a WMV HD file)

I have had disappointing results thus far...tough gig! What I am looking for is suggestions, pointers, settings which are known to work, guides or any direction which will help me sort this out!

Thanks!

Thats a very tough situation you have there. It depends on what your using it for. Are you planning on letting people download the entire full res clip, or just a really nice looking web preview?

I can help you, but I need to know exactly what your looking to do with it. Email me directly.

What were your settings on the Quicktime?

Use h264

Thanks...I am using H.264...not that new ;).

I guess I will ask some specific questions:

As I am recording in 1080i, do I need to deinterlace before encoding to H.264 (or WMV HD)?

Is it better to export from FCP to an intermediate such as Apple Int Codec before encoding with H.264?

Everyone seems to say that 1080p requires a bit rate of ~8000kbs and almost all the 1080p HD video clips I have seen use a similar bitrate. I cannot get reasonable looking video unless I use an exorbitantly high bitrate (i.e., 10-15,000). Missing a setting?

Can someone layout a suggested workflow for me starting from Final Cut Pro (latest) in order to get video with quality and size similar to the Apple and WMV HD examples?

My recommendation for internet distribution would be to encode to 720p resolution using a bit rate around 4-6 Mbps. Higher resolutions and bit rates are just too much for internet distribution for now, and are difficult to play on many computers. 720p will look fine and play smoother on more computers, and be faster to download.

Thanks Kevin- My problem is that I cannot get the file to "look good" when encoding 720p at 4000-6000 bit rate! I am really confounded by this. That is why I am posting here, is my encoding results suck and I am looking for suggestions/ settings to try and help with eliminating the artifacting, mottling and general obscureness I am experiencing...

Anyone encode 1080p/720p with FCP/QT Pro/ WMV Studio Pro HD?????

Still working on it! I have turned to Apple's Compressor now :crossing fingers:

I would love some input on settings for HD (1080p or 720p) video!

Thanks

Have you seen this? - Its Ken Stones YOUTUBE settings made in Compressor.

I followed it but tweeked my settings for HDV 1080i -
I read it in a crunch - But maybe I need to read it again or explore better options
My Quicktimes look pretty good, but also with a mega high bitrate.

The reason I used this was because my videos are being hosted by another place (kinda like Youtube) which compresses AGAIN your .mov (quicktime) to .flv (flash). Since I cant export .flv right now - I gotta try and make it look its best as a quicktime.

Anyway - hope it has something useful

Interesting read for sure...likely will come in useful one of these days. I have almost come to the conclusion that I am seeing the best results I can get under the circumstances...not sure...no one really knows too much about this type of encoding!
