Quicktime HDV codec on xp
by elpatan on Mar 6, 2007 at 11:53:20 pm

I've been trying to open quicktime files compressed with HDV codec on XP. So far quicktime player will play the audio only. No picture, just a white screen. How can I open these files to work them on combustion or AFX?

have them exported from the mac as something else.

Quicktime HDV codec is not available for the pc version of quicktime, much like DVCPRO.

What's then a good format? My concerns are that I'm starting with something that's already very compressed (MPEG HDV...), but also exporting uncompressed frames is going to yield HUGE files... Any Suggestions?

I guess the question is. What would be the way to export the HDV files from the mac as MPEG streams with no recompression?

What are they going to be used for on the PC?

If they are going to be edited then put it to tape and hen recapture on the PC.

The Images were captured on FCP and I would like to move them to my home PC to work on Combustion or AfterFX.

Quicktime Animation codec is a common interchange format between Mac/PC. It will be slightly smaller than going uncompressed, since Animation uses a lossless form of compression that looks just as good...but files will still be large. You'll save yourself from compressing to another lossy form of compression.

It's worth bearing in mind that a tga sequence will take up a lot more disk space over png despite both being mathmatically lossless.
IMO I prefer to work with a single (png) movie file over thousands of single images.

It's a London thing.

I'd export as PNG or PhotoJPEG at 100% quality, both will be smaller than Animation which, like PNG, is a 4:4:4 CODEC.

Exporting as MPEG-2 Long_GOP will give you nightmares in C* or AE on your PC. - You do NOT want to be compositing with MPEG-2.

It's a London thing.

png is a great format.

I use it on all of my personal projects.

There are 2 issues though.

1 it takes a lot longer to compress to.

2 some people experience gamma issues when processing the sequences through different softwares
