Replacing Downconverted footage with HD footage in FCP V.5

I hope this makes sense, but i'm just learning HDV...
We shot HDV Footage (Sony HVR-V1U, 1080 60i) and began to cut the footage in FCP V.5 as HD footage. However, after encountering numerous problems with the monitor and playback, people recommended that we downconvert the HD footage to DV, cut the project in DV and then up-convert/online with the original HD tape once we're really to output.
This all sounds well and good, but what i'm curious about is how do we replace the old HD footage with new DV footage in the timeline of FCP if we want to keep the cut we already have?
I guess i'm just unclear about offlining and then onlining footage...

You will need to carefully read the manual describing the use of Media Manager to convert your project into an HD timeline without media. Then use the new project to recapture just the shots in the timeline with handles as HD. I do this with Uncompressed HD but it also works with HDV.

yes. i thought as much. thank you. it's an interesting little maneuver and we've been tinkering with it over the last few days. it makes me wonder why final cut pro hd doesn't make an effort to stress the complications involved. or is downconversion for editing just common knowledge? maybe it is and i'm just a newbie.
