 | Setup Advice Dell 2407WPF

Hi Folks
We have just purchased one of the Dell 24inch LCD's & I was wondering if someone here could point us in the direction of some good setup advice, regards connection, Image modes & Display Settings, colour profiles etc.
Edius 4 connects to the monitor for timeline overlay preview in either DVI or Component, however the Component does not look good at all, very dark also lots of motion smear & interlace jaggies, this could be due to the fact we are still on an AGP bus with an ATI X800Pro256 using its HDTV Component output, though I expect some tweaking is necessary. We will be upgrading to PCI-E on this system shortly and are looking at the PNYFX1500PVE. The DVI output on the other hand looks much much nicer, what are the benefits/pitfalls of DVI/Component. (I was of the understanding that Component was preferable to DVI for 1080i HDV, maybe I am wrong I have not quite gotten my head around this yet)
We are working with HDV in Canopus HQ format @ 1080/50i so any tips on how to get the best results with this 60Hz panel in PAL would also be great.
Thanks again for all past advice, regards Dave.

The analog input can be adjusted with the controls on the monitor. It might not be a bad idea to try to calibrate it with a probe.
The monitors are optimized better for a digital signal, no question, but we use one in the studio as a shooting monitor on an HVX200 via analog component and it seems to get high marks from the DP...

Also - thi smay be obvious, but I've seen it on 2 monitors so far, that dell can incorrectly be set to full screen 1200 lines tall, not 1080 - so make sure there are letterbox bars on screen.
Thanks,
Harry.

Thanks Tim, Harry
I do very much appreciate your input, Tim we are looking to get the monitor profiled & calibrated, can you tell me what is your experience using digital interface over analog. ie is it reasonable to assume the following workflow with some accuracy, when editing in the timeline having the monitor conected via DVI Digital. When monitoring footage for ingest use the Component inputs to preview the camera source. Is this how guys are working? Is it possible to get some continuity in the colour profile's between the analog component & DVI output of these LCD's.
If we were to invest in an M25 HDV deck in the future with HDMI out thus maintainig a digital approach would this simplify the workflow?
We are in a 50Hz (PAL) environment this is a 60Hz LCD is there anything to be gained from adjusting the refresh to something closer to a multiple of 50 say 75 for example as some site's suggest? (the panel reports a max refresh of 75Hz) I just do not know enough of the technical details here and I am probably just overcomplicating the issue.
Harry I found the 1:1 setting for Component, the DVI seems to use aspect when set in the graphics card properties.
Thanks again guys for your help & patience, Dave.

Unfortunately you can't expect from this screen what a true calibrated monitor will do. We are using Dells ourselves (11 of them) and we are quite happy with them, but the only way to calibrate them we found is something like the Spyder or the Huey, which both change the monitor profile in the computer. To my knowledge you can't access the LUTs in the Dell (as you could in expensive monitors made for calibration). Accordingly, only your computer output can be calibrated to some degree, not the input via analog or via HDMI from the M25.
BTW, for our single serious color calibration seat we are using a JVC 1710 tube.
Regarding refresh rates: no, 75 won't help much, since refresh rate on the flat and the images from the computer would probably still not sync, so you might still observe some tearing. But you could always give it a try.

Thanks Uli
We are starting to get to grips with the monitor, are you using the DVI on your FCP systems?
Picture looks very good when feeding it a clean signal from a deck, so I think what I am seeing from the graphics card component output is not the best with motion so maybe the FX1500PVE output will be an improvement, will post after calibration excersise.

We are using DVI, yes. But you have to understand that interlaced footage will never look perfect on a LCD.
When coming in digital, this screen is not de-interlacing. BTW, you wouldn't like if it did, since that makes fine detail from the computer unreadable.
