Hi Guys
Anyone here have experience going HDV to SD DVD with Edius 4 from HQ timeline, worst case would be to SD 4:3 would the LossLess codec be of any help during export of file for MPG encoding or would it be best to back out to HDV then re import as down converted DV file for MPG encoding, the aim here is to preserve best picture possible.
Please excuse my ignorance, I know that with Ciniform & PPro you have options to avoid the export back to tape but not sure with canopus HQ solution.

I haven't tested this in Edius Pro 4 yet, but in version 3 there was a significant quality problem when encoding directly from an HD(V) timeline to SD MPEG2 using Procoder Express. For that and other reasons the best thing to do would be to render the entire timeline to either HQ or HDV format, then pull the resulting file back into Edius using the SD project setting for the type of output you want (i.e. widescreen or 4x3 SD). This doesn't require re-rendering the HD file because Edius automatically scales it to match the project settings, which then works correctly to output SD MPEG2 via Procoder.
So like this:
HDV source --> HDV or HQ project --> HDV or HQ output --> SD project --> SD output.
One benefit of this approach is that you end up with both an HD and SD copy of your finished project. Main downside is that it takes a long time to do all this over again if you make editing changes.

Thanks very much Kevin
Do you have to change the field order in Pro Coder? to reflect new output as HQ file would be Top FF.
Also if I may ask do you have recommendation if going to Encore DVD for menu authoring as it is rumored Pro Coder .mpg files do not play nicely with Encore V2.0, would it be best to render out an .avi from Edius with say canopus Lossless codec & send that to Encore or is that just 1 step to many regards transcoding.

I think if you pull an HQ file into an Edius SD project, Edius will fix the field order before handing off to Procoder for the SD MPEG2 encoding. In fact this may be the reason why you need to go back through an SD project instead of encoding directly from HD to SD, which as I noted earlier doesn't work well.
I don't know how to get the best results when going from Edius to Encore for DVD authoring. I use Ulead DVD Workshop.

Thanks again Kevin
I have followed your sugested workflow & it works very well from SD timeline to DVD, I did notice though that the footage which was shot on an A1U had some problems after down covert to SD DVD in areas with thin horizontal lines passing accross the frame, a sort of flickery or pulsing effect. I am wondering if this is due to the conversion or just my lack of experience with this camera & its settings.
I will play around some more to see if I can get good results to send to Encore 2.0.
