trouble viewing HDV footage...
by beenice on Nov 30, 2006 at 8:36:05 pm

Shot some footage with my Sony HVR-Z1 on a Sony HDV Minidv tape. Didn't change any settings shot like I always have. Now when I tried to play this footage on my camera, it's only visible when I rewind or fast forward the tape. When played normally, time code runs but the screen is blank( blue). I tried the tape on a Sony HDV deck and had no picture or TC no matter what I do.
Any insight?

This sounds like tape threading to me...

Have you tried to record to a different tape since this happened?

Ck the 50i/60i setting. I had similar situation where the camera recorded 50i & would scan but not play. Subsequently the camera had been changed to 60i but after changing it to 50i it worked.

Thanks for the input....
I have done a test shoot after this incident and I can play the footage back no problem. I tied the 50i/60i setting with no success. Anything else I can do or am I going to have to shoot again?
Bad tape?

thanks,

I'd have the tape transport checked and serviced. It sounds like the problem tape did not thread properly when you were recording to me.

If this was indeed the case, the tape's contents are basically useless unless you could somehow get it to thread wrong in exactly the same way to play it out, but if it threaded incorrectly to begin with, I can't believe the signal is all there anyway as the tape most likely did not engage the head fully...

Again...IF it ends up being that the tape threaded improperly.
