Looks like a handheld version of the H1 with the following:
Flip out LCD screen (thank heavens!)
Records to either tape OR Flash Memory card (interesting)
XLR's
Focus assist via magnification and peaking
Zoom, Focus and Iris rings can work left or right selectable
Black stretch
Cineframe 24/25
G1 has HD/SD SDI output, Timecode set and Genlock (interesting)
A1 does not and is cheaper.
I must say, it looks good and will give the Z1 a run for its money if the price is right. As usual Canon have come to market a bit late, albeit with what on paper looks like a better product than Sony in terms of specs (my Japanese is virtually non-existent but from what I gleaned!)

This looks like it could be *the* camera for affordable long-form videography once it's shipping. According to Chris the price will be $3999 for the entry-level model and $6999 for the advanced version. Get out your credit cards!

There is nothing wrong at all with the Canon 24f mode. It is a resolution drop from its 60i mode, and not quite the equal of the HD100's, but fully functioning 24 frames once in a NLE. Unlike the Sony Cineframe 24, which is useless.

24F is great. It yields 24 progresive frames per second evenly spanned within 1 second @ whatever shutter speed you select (including 1/48th).
Excellent for simulating the cadence of a real film camera shooting at 24 frames per second.

Sounds ok, I had been planning on purchasing either an fx1 or ai to serve as a second camera to my z1 now I am wondering if the new canon cameras video look can be mached with the mine, cause it could complement my offerings with 24f.
That was my cruddy Japanese! It sure looked that way in the specs of the Japanese site. Would have been nice though... Still looks good, but it's come to market a bit too late. Sony have already saturated that segment of the market with the Z1/FX1. My next purchase would have to be a HD camera which records to BluRay or Flash memory at minimum 35mbs, with interchangable lenses - for $ 3000!

still a lot of questions --- low light, over image quality, ease of operation of focusing, irising, zooming etc. but wow, it's nice to fantasize until we find out its flaws... charlie

Good yes, perfect no. Aliasing reported more apparent on the resolution reduced axis, and there is a noted drop in resolution compared to the interlaced modes of the cams. I haven't heard of any de-interlacing artifacts reported. The advantages of these modes are of course that they are available in addition to the interlaced modes of the cams were designed around. This gives an incredible flexability in shooting. I think it is apparent that only the Sony 24CF is "crap" and all of the other modes (Sony/Canon) are quite good.
It seems to be the wave of the future. Interlaced/progressive- 24p/25p/30p/60i/60p - All in one.

Rather than debate about the merits of 24f, I'm more interested to know whether the camera's tapes will work in Sony HDV feeder decks. All modes, or only some?

Doug: looks like you've been having trouble getting an answer to this question around the internet. As an educated guess, I wouldn't expect the Sony deck to support all modes of the Canon cameras unless you can confirm otherwise. So you'd probably have to use one of the Canon cameras as a deck, which isn't that bad considering they cost about the same as the Sony decks.
