PAL HD vs NTSC HD
by Andrew B. (Andrei B.) on Jun 20, 2006 at 4:56:47 pm

We are in Europe. We'r going to buy Panasonic HVX200 to shoot HD. Here in Europe it is really difficult to get price under 6000 euro (about $7600) No PAL version on USA stock. Cheapest NTSC camera is about $4000. Huge price difference.

Do we really depend on PAL if we shoot HD, 24 and we going to produce it for NTSC and PAL market. Again we do not going to use DV format at all. Is it ok if we here in Europe will use NTSC camera.

Thank you, Andrew

Eek. No way, Jose!! Avoid NTSC at all costs in PAL land. You're heading for all kinds of trouble if you take that road.

If your shooting in HD 24fps, as you state, then your fine. 24fps of any resolution isn't PAL or NTSC, but plays fine in all regions. It's why we have all watched films all these years.

To quote Barry Green: "Unfortunately European HD does indeed differ from US HD. While the frame sizes and color space are the same, the frame rate is still different.

So the same NTSC/PAL type of situation exists yet again, and the HVX is made in two versions, one that is appropriate for countries that use NTSC and one that is appropriate for countries that use PAL. The NTSC/US version shoots 24p/60i, the EU/PAL version shoots 25p/50i."

Correct. He wants to shoot in 24p so he will need to use the NTSC market version, which will work just fine for global production.

actualy it is no difference for us to use 25p or 24p. even more we are going to use overcranking for slow motion.

i just want to say we are not going to use the camera for SD shooting and no interlacing - only full frame.
still NTSC is ok for us locating in Europe? again we going to have end product for both NTSC and PAL markets.

[Andrew B.] "Cheapest NTSC camera is about $4000. Huge price difference."

You won't find a legitimate seller offering the US version for $4000! That kind of price is used by bait 'n' switch scam shops. The cheapest legitimate US price is around $5300 or $5400.

Yip, I'd guess that at the end of the day the best bet would be to simply buy the HVX200 from an authorised Panasonic dealer in Europe as the price difference is not really going to be as huge as you imagined.

We are located in Europe and just trying to buy a NTSC version, for two reasons:
- No conforming from 25 to 24p with it's sound related issues
- More overcranking at 60p

I found it very annoying Panasonic is making a European model without 24 fps.

You won't find a dealer in Europe, though, since the NTSc version doesn't have the "CE" (electrical security and such standards) sign and they can't import it. It's legally OK importing it on your own.

Beware of cheapies, but the price difference should still allow you a nice trip to New York and buying at a trusted dealer like B&H.

Hope this helps,
