Anyone using Prospect HD ingest with a single dual-core processor?
by Gary Taylor on May 12, 2006 at 12:44:33 pm

Hello all,
I am wondering if anyone is using a processor like a dual-core Athlon 64 4800+ in Prospect HD ingest system. I am thinking about putting together a smaller footprint system and I wanted see if anyone had an experiences to report.
Thanks,
Gary

Intel 955 or 965 Extreme Edition processors have been qualified for Prospect HD ingest.

Hello David,
Thanks for your response. From what I have seen the Athlon 64 4800+ holds its own against Intel's fastest Extreme Edition processors. Have you guys tested them and found them lacking in some way?
Thanks again,
Gary

Normally the AMD CPUs are better, yet in this case the 1066Mhz FSB on the Intel is the clear winner. CineForm need memory speed, and the Intel proc. has it.

So David, in a very round about way, are you saying NO to the dual core AMD's?

Yes to dual Proc AMD, but the dual core alone is not fast enough.

Thanks for the response David. Hopefully the AMD AM2 processors with their support for DDR2 will fair better. No matter what though it looks like we should have several more choices for single processor dual core capture by the end of the year once Intel release their next processors.
Thanks again,
Gary

So you've tested both types of processors and found the Intel to have the speed advantage?

Because the AMD doesn't use a FSB. They call it "outdated technology". Instead they have their own system called "Hyper-Transport". So saying that the Intel has a 1024Mhz FSB and is therefore superior, is, uh, irrelevent because AMD doesn't use a FSB.

Any comparisons I've seen show the latest AMD64 Athlon technology to be superior to Intel's offerings at anything involving video processing. For example, on Tom's Hardware guide, with the Mainconcept Encoder test, the AMD comes out on top.

Yes we tested both and fully understand the technology involved. We know how good hyper-transport, and AMD is the only dual procession workstation solution we recommend (check CineForm.com.) HOWEVER, in dual core single bus Hypertransport or FSB, the memory speed is what is important. In this case Intel leads (T.H. agrees -- http://www23.tomshardware.com/cpu.html?modelx=33&model1=233&chart=57&model2... Test numbers on an MPEG encoder has no baring on wavelet encoding performance.

Thanks for that info... I'd be curious to see a benchmark on that wavelet transform to see how all the speed factors interact.

One has to bear in mind the extreme cost of the Extreme Edition processor as well...

Hi David,
This early test over at Anandtech looks promising for the nForce 500 chipset. Hopefully once these chips and motherboards are widely available you guys will find they are up to snuff.

Yes I expect this new system will work well.
