HDV Downconvert to DigiBeta
by RiotManZ on Feb 21, 2006 at 4:02:07 pm

Hi all!

In our company we're planning on four 60min features with a lot of reinactments. They will all be shot on HDV (Sony Z1). But we will have to mix it with DigiBeta footage. We will be edited on Avid Media Composer 9000.
So, the best and only choice (or is there another way?) for us will be to downconvert all the HDV footage.
My question:
Does anyone of you have any advices for me to go the best way possible to do this?
I mean, any special technical setups or settings to go for?

thanks
Riot

RiotmanZ- Use the component out from the Z-1 and dub your select HDV footage directly to Digibeta. Then you are working with one format.

I would recommend the Convergent Designs HD-Connect.
This will allow you to dub with matching TC.
Using the component out of the camera or deck will not give you matching TC (if this is important).

We're neck deep in HDV production and have tested this box to dub to HDCAM and downconvert to Digibeta.
Both work like a champ!

Currently, we're using the box to downconvert HDV to SD, using the DVCPro 50 codec throught a Black Magic card into FCP-HD. The only frustration I have is the Sony deck is terribly slow to respond....painfully slow. It's the deck/camera's mechanics not the Convergent box.

We have tested it (Convergent box) with our Symphony and DS. Neither could control the Sony deck. Passing video is not an issue...it works just like a tape deck (even through our router).
There is a firmware update that is available that may fix this. We flashed the box, but it messed caused problems with FCP batch capture, so we reved back.

Just a suggestion....

BTW....be afraid of the JVC 720 brand of HDV. It's not supported as well as Sony's 1080i.

Hey guys,
thanks for your fast replies!
Today our producers told us they won't need timecode indetical tapes, so we'll go for the 'component-solution'.
I did a test with the Sony HVR-M10E and it turned out great. The best feature for me is the letterboxing during the downconvert. So i won't have to resize the clips in the timeline and render all this effects.

thanks
