Anyone using this MPEG audio for broadcasting???
by Paul (Paul_Harb) on Oct 30, 2005 at 10:38:12 pm

Just curious if most people that are using these cameras to shoot TV, if they are using the MPEG 1 compressed audio from the cameras or some other form of uncompressed audio?

Paul

It could be used, depending on the noise floor. A good test is to record silence. Now capture the tape and check the silence dB value. Is it at least -70dB? That's good. Is it -45dB? That's bad and you'll need a different audio solution.

Test it out on your camera when you get the chance. You may be able to find the manufacturer's stated noise floor for your camera in your manual. Don't go by that though. Test for yourself. Of course you could use anything that's within broadcast legal limits, but It's a psycological fact that people will sit through bad video if the audio is good and not the other way around.

what are your thoughts?

Simple answer is yes. MPEG 1 layer II is fine for dialog and effects. If you are recording music then I would prefer a uncompressed PCM like DAT, DA-88 or portable hard disk system like HHB or DEVA.

By comparison, I have found the Sony Z1 to sound better than the PD 150/170 models which have quite poor A/D conversion, followed by PCM recording, so the noise floor is high. The really important consideration is the microphone and where it is placed. Issues like MPEG versus PCM are minor compared with getting a decent mic in the right place.
