Yet another monitor question

We are adding HDV -- already have the Sony Z1U camera and the little HDV VCR -- but I have no way to look at it which gives me any faith in what I have recorded. We are looking at the Sony Luma Pro monitors, and also considering just going with another Apple Cinema display with a DeckLink HDLink. I've been editing with AVID MOJO, but have a copy of FCP HD and will be upgrading to FCP5 for editing HDV. Our initial HDV productions will be internal -- some family documentaries, etc. -- in other words, no paying client while we learn to make the format look its best. So I want a decent monitoring situation, but I don't have to have an immediate broadcast-quality signal flow.
Will the Cinema Display be acceptable for a while, or will the Luma monitor give me a "night and day" better picture? I know this is just opinion -- but for those of you who have done this, I'd like a few of yours.

I picked up a Dell 2405 24" LCD monitor. Was looking at the Cinema display but heard a ton of good things about the Dell and the price sure was nice - got it for $960 shipped. The other plus to the Dell is it has component in - very handy when working with the Z1 or the HDV deck.
It has 1920 by 1200 res, but you can adjust the image so that it shows the HDV picture correctly with a bit of black bars on the top and bottom. So far the HDV picture looks amazing - the sharpness and color are just incredible.

I've just gone thru the process of buying a studio monitor.
Using a prerecorded Sony hdv tape (flowers, rice paddies etc) we compared the Sony LCD Luma 23" [LMD232WS] with their CRT PVM 20"[PVM 20L5A].
Both had factory default settings.
The real differences I found between the monitors were:
i. Seemed like ~10% greater luminious detail with the PVM.
ii. Motion softening occurred on the Luma before it would on the PVM. It seemed like motion softening of the Luma was half way between the PVM and Z1.
iii. Didn't really get into adjusting the chroma levels but on default settingsthe Luma seemed to inhance reds i.e rosy cheeks whilst PVM had more greens.
iv. Yes, blacks were blacker on PVM.
v. Picture looked crisper and you felt like you could see more information, chroma/luma detail on the PVM than on the Luma.
Even though I know the Luma spec is 1080 vs the PVM's 800 lines (actually its 800=4:3 & 600=16:9)
vi. Cost of Luma is 50% higher than PVM.
Lastly I intend to purchase a Dell 2405 which I hear compares well with other 23" lcd on the market so I felt picture wise I was getting a better CC/Motion effect monitor with the PVM.
Finally as opposed to lastly, I got the PVM home and compared it to my 36" Sony Wega [KVHR36M31] and found there was <5% difference in quality.
Re: Yet another monitor question -HPL2335 (not impressed) by Derek Antonio Serra on Jun 30, 2005 at 1:32:24 pm
I have the HP L2335 in demo for a few days. After reading rave reviews on the lcd monitor, I must honestly say that I am very disappointed with the video performance of the monitor. HDV footage viewed straight from the camera via RGB looks great - as long as there's no movement at all. Any movement at all results in motion strobing. I'm presuming this is the result of pumping 1080i into a progressive lcd. When viewed on a HD CRT the results are far more pleasing to the eye. A Broadcast crt produces IMHO a far more accurate image of what the Z1 produces. Even a SD Sony PVM monitor looked better than the L2335. Trying to configure it for use as a standalone monitor was a nightmare as I could not figure out how to set the resolution manually on the panel itself as it defaulted to something ridiculous like 680 x 272 when I plugged in an S-video cable. The only instructions were on a cd, but gave no real detail. Grrr. Back it goes...

Re: How is the motion on the Dell? by Yoyodyne on Jun 30, 2005 at 11:30:25 pm
I have not done any "super critical" side by side, double blind comparisons but motion looks pretty good to me. I'm looking at footage shot in 24 cineframe mode so my idea of good may differ from others.
